California grad student snared in alleged bomb plot after leaving terrifying message in restroom

A graduate student accused of trying to spread fear and hateful rhetoric on the campus of San Jose State University has been arrested, federal officials said.

The Department of Justice announced Monday that a Northern California graduate student was taken into custody after allegedly leaving messages containing hate speech and bomb threats at the university.

Ziheng “Tony” Fang, a 30-year-old San Jose resident pursuing a master’s degree in data science, is accused of writing multiple threatening and hateful messages, according to the DOJ. Federal authorities said the incidents included a series of messages discovered in November 2025.

One note allegedly contained racist language targeting several groups, including the phrase, “Kill all Jews, Muslims, Ch—s and Mexicans,” along with a threat that read, “Mass bombing 11/11 and 11/12 guess.”

Another message allegedly warned, “!WARNING! MASS BOMB NEXT WEEK,” according to authorities.

The November threat was found in San Jose State University’s MacQuarrie Hall, prompting university police to increase foot patrols after the discovery, the school’s student newspaper reported.

“According to the allegations in a criminal complaint and court documents filed on July 9, Fang, 30, of San Jose, California, wrote a hateful and threatening message placed in a plastic cover sheet taped to the bathroom wall of a men’s restroom on the campus of San Jose State University,” the Justice Department said.

Federal officials also said Fang’s campus access records and surveillance footage tied him to several locations where the messages were later found. “Fang accessed buildings in the days leading up to the discovery of hateful and threatening messages in 16 of the 18 instances where key card access is required… Surveillance footage also shows Fang entering and exiting the restrooms or restroom areas where some of the messages were written up to a day before their discovery,” the DOJ statement continued.

SJSU Police have recorded more than 20 instances of hateful and threatening messages written in restrooms across campus since October 2024.

Graffiti in MacQuarrie Hall displaying Nazi and racial slurs targeted mass bombing towards Muslims and Jews back on October 2024, while anti-Black language was even on whiteboards in May 2024.

Fang was initially arrested and charged with vandalism and publish threat to school on May 20.

Formal federal charges were then filed and Fang made his initial appearance in federal court on July 10, he appeared in court earlier today again for identification.
