A missing DoorDash driver from California has been found dead in the trunk of a Tesla left along a highway, prompting authorities to investigate the disturbing discovery as a homicide.
Javier Becerril, 42, of Hollister, was officially identified Tuesday after investigators found his body last Thursday inside the vehicle near Highway 152 by the San Luis Reservoir, the California Highway Patrol said.
Family members had reported Becerril missing before authorities made the grim discovery.
According to CHP investigators, details surrounding the case raised enough concern for detectives to treat Becerril’s death as a homicide.
“There are circumstances that are suspicious, and that’s why we’re treating it as such,” a CHP investigator said.

Investigators are now examining the Tesla’s onboard computer system, hoping it may contain data or video evidence that could help them determine who was involved in Becerril’s death.
In Hollister, other DoorDash drivers have created a small memorial in a Safeway parking lot, a location where they said Becerril frequently stopped to pick up delivery orders.
Authorities said Becerril’s family is cooperating fully with the investigation as detectives continue working to piece together what happened.
A GoFundMe organized by the family remembered Becerril as “a father, devoted son, caring brother, and cherished cousin.”
“Javier had a kind heart, a generous spirit, and was always willing to help those he loved. His smile, laughter, and the memories he created with family and friends will never be forgotten,” the fundraiser states.
