Jude Bellingham’s England career already carries the weight of a veteran’s résumé: two European Championship finals, a World Cup semi-final and a World Cup quarter-final.
All of that has come before the age of 23. With five caps already to his name and potentially more than a decade still ahead of him, his international story may only be getting started.
That rapid rise has prompted Andy Townsend, the former Chelsea and Aston Villa midfielder, to make a bold comparison: he believes Bellingham has already moved beyond Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes in terms of England influence. Is he right?

Speaking to CasinoHawks, Townsend described Jude Bellingham as the standout midfielder in the tournament “bar none,” adding that while Michael Olise impressed early on, Bellingham has been England’s most decisive midfield presence since Paul Gascoigne.
Townsend argued that although England have had outstanding midfielders in the years since Gazza — including Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes — none have stamped their authority on the national team in quite the same way Bellingham has.
He pointed to Bellingham’s performances in Qatar and his displays in the current competition as evidence of a player operating at an extraordinary level, praising not only his quality on the ball but the commanding presence he brings to England’s midfield.
