A 27-year-old woman died after receiving an injection described as an anti-aging serum at a holistic wellness center in the Bronx, and police have arrested a man accused of performing the procedure without a U.S. medical license, authorities and sources said Monday.
Elizabeth Baron lost consciousness around noon Sunday after Luis Rojas Cabrera, 55, allegedly administered the treatment inside Bereshit Lifestyle Center on Riverdale Avenue near West 232nd Street, according to police and law enforcement sources.
Employees at the wellness center called authorities, and Baron was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 1:10 p.m., officials and sources said.
Rojas Cabrera was arrested several hours later and charged with reckless endangerment and unauthorized practice of a profession, police said.
Sources said he is licensed to practice medicine in the Dominican Republic, but is not licensed in the United States.
The New York City medical examiner’s office is conducting toxicology testing, and the results could affect whether the charges against Rojas Cabrera are upgraded or otherwise changed, sources said.
