A police chase in San Francisco ended in a violent collision Sunday night, injuring nine people after a pickup truck fleeing officers crashed into an occupied vehicle near South Van Ness Avenue and 14th Street.
The pursuit began shortly after 8 p.m., when San Francisco police officers saw the pickup being driven erratically in the area of Guerrero and 19th streets.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver did not comply and instead sped away, driving recklessly and nearly striking a patrol car involved in the chase.
The pursuit came to a sudden end when the fleeing pickup broadsided a second vehicle with four people inside. The force of the crash sent that car spinning into a fire hydrant and a nearby car dealership, ABC7 reported.
San Francisco Fire Department crews arrived at the crash scene and evaluated nine people from the two vehicles involved.
Two people sustained critical injuries, while six others were treated for injuries described as minor to moderate. A ninth person was assessed by paramedics but declined to be taken to a hospital.
Police detained all five people who had been inside the pickup truck, including the driver, at the scene.
Officials have not released the names of those detained, and potential criminal charges are still pending as investigators continue to review the case.
