After Michelle Hadley walked away from a relationship she later characterized as toxic, she had no reason to think the breakup would spiral into a criminal nightmare — or that she would one day be facing the possibility of life behind bars for offenses she insisted she never committed.
Within a year of ending things with former U.S. Marshal Ian Diaz, Michelle became the target of what prosecutors would later describe as an elaborate and malicious plot to set her up. Federal authorities argued the scheme was tied to a fight over the condo the former couple had shared, NBC Los Angeles reported.
At first, Anaheim Police believed Michelle was behind a barrage of threatening messages aimed at Ian’s new wife, Angela Diaz. Investigators also thought she had impersonated Angela online and lured men to the couple’s home by posting about violent “rape fantasies,” according to statements from Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas.
The accusations led to Michelle’s arrest, and she was charged with multiple crimes that, if proven, could have sent her to prison for life.
But as the investigation unfolded, authorities discovered evidence showing Michelle had been framed. After spending 88 days in custody, she was finally released.
“They told me I’m free to go and the charges had been completely dropped,” Michelle recalled in Netflix’s A Toxic Love Story. “Freedom was so sweet at that point because, oh man, I mean, you don’t appreciate it until you’ve lost it.”
Standing outside the courthouse shortly after her release, Michelle described the entire experience to reporters as a “huge nightmare for me.”
“Probably the most traumatic experience of my life,” she said tearfully. “And I’m glad it’s finally over and I get to move on with my life.”

How Did Michelle Hadley and Ian Diaz Meet?
Michelle and Ian met in 2013 and had their first date at Disneyland, according to the documentary. Ian—an avid Disney fan—compared his new love interest to the Disney princess Belle.
For a time, Michelle believed the relationship was a fairy tale.
“Ian was attentive, he was sweet. He was thoughtful,” Michelle remembered in A Toxic Love Story. “I started seeing him as a really good option for a long term relationship.”
Michelle Hadley Says There Were Red Flags in the Relationship
After the couple purchased a condo in Anaheim, Michelle described seeing some disturbing red flags in the relationship.
Michelle said Ian asked to watch her have sex with other men, despite knowing she viewed herself as a “wholesome” rule follower.
According to Michelle, she repeatedly refused, but Ian continued pressuring her and sent links to men he considered potential partners. She eventually agreed.
“I just remember feeling like a beautiful part of me had died,” she recalled while fighting back tears. “Because it was just this part of myself that had existed outside of all of this ugliness in the world and he just f-cking killed it.”
According to Michelle, Ian also became increasingly more controlling, tracking her movements and asking her to change things about herself.
“I was really young at this point and I didn’t have a very well developed sense of self yet,” she explained in the documentary. “So, when Ian came in and started to take over, it was really easy to just step in line.”
Michelle decided to leave the relationship in 2015, moving out of the condo and into her parent’s home.
“In September 2015, Ms. Hadley and John Doe argued over email and text messages about the status of their relationship and financial issues surrounding their condo,” Tony Rackauckas said in his 2017 statement, without referring to Ian by name. “Some of Ms. Hadley’s emails contained accusations toward Doe, descriptions of events in their relationship and included language with religious overtones. Ms. Hadley and Doe then ended contact with each other in the Fall of 2015.”
Michelle Hadley is Falsely Accused in “Rape Fantasy” Scheme
By early 2016, Ian began a new relationship with Angela. Within months, they were married and living together, according to the documentary.
In June 2016, the couple contacted Anaheim police and alleged that Michelle had sent Angela messages threatening to kidnap or kill her.
“Watch your back tonight and this week,” one message read, per a lawsuit later filed on Michelle’s behalf. Another warned, “I hope you are scared of death tomorrow.”
According to Rackauckas, the messages “contained language very similar Ms. Hadley’s September 2015 emails,” leading police to believe she was behind the threatening notes.
On June 13, the couple told police that Michelle posed as Angela online and asked men to come to her house to engage in a “rape fantasy,” the prosecutor said.
“Her story was bolstered by the fact that law enforcement contacted and intercepted some of these men near Diaz’ residence,” Rackauckas said, “who admitted to responding to the Craigslist ad and believed they were being invited to engage in a consensual encounter with Diaz.”
Less than two weeks later, prosecutors said Angela called police again reporting she’d been attacked by a man attempting to rape her in her garage. Michelle was arrested and charged with a series of charges including stalking and attempted rape.
However, when analyzing the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and digital data, the messages were linked back to the Diaz household. Angela was arrested in 2017 and pled guilty to kidnapping, false imprisonment, forgery and falsely reporting crimes, according to a statement from prosecutors.
Though she was initially believed to be the only person behind the scheme, years later, federal prosecutors discovered that Ian had actually orchestrated the plot.
As Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr. noted in a statement, “Ian Diaz abused his position as a deputy U.S. Marshal to execute an intricate cyberstalking scheme that framed an innocent person for sexual assault, leading to her unjust imprisonment for 88 days.”
Ian was found guilty in 2023 of conspiracy to commit cyberstalking, cyberstalking, perjury and obstruction of justice and was sentenced to 10 years and one month behind bars, federal prosecutors said.
As for Ian’s possible motive, Department of Justice Special Agent Jason Higley theorized that it likely went deeper than just real estate.
“As much is the condo was part of this and he didn’t want to lose his home, to me, it boils down to Ian wanting to control someone,” he said in the documentary. “He wanted to control Michelle and she got away and that made him angry.”
Ian sold the condo in 2016. Michelle never got her down payment back.
Where is Michelle Hadley Now?
Michelle gave birth to her daughter on the same day Ian was convicted.
“My life has been filled by strange, often symbolic, and sometimes beautiful coincidences like this,” she said at the time in a statement to NBC News. “My daughter represents my rainbow after a very long storm, and my heart has never felt so full.”
Today, Michelle still wonders how her relationship turned into such a nightmare.
“Ian got everything he wanted but it actually cost him his freedom,” she shared in A Toxic Love Story. “I often look back and wonder how Ian turned into the person who wanted control and power over me.”
Michelle later sued the Anaheim Police Department and reached an undisclosed settlement with the city in 2021.
Before the settlement, city attorneys argued that investigators had probable cause to believe Michelle was responsible, according to Courthouse News Service.
She’s now found new purpose as a mom and has re-enrolled in school.
