Patrick Kane news: NHL Stanley Cup champion signs 2-year contract with Chicago Blackhawks; fans hope to see him with Connor Bedard

CHICAGO () — Patrick Kane is headed back to where his NHL legend began, with the Chicago Blackhawks confirming Thursday that the franchise icon is returning to the team.

Kane has agreed to a two-year contract carrying an $8 million salary cap hit, according to the organization. The deal brings back one of the most important players in Blackhawks history, a winger who spent 16 seasons in Chicago and helped power the club to three Stanley Cup championships.

Hawks legend and former broadcaster Eddie Olczyk spoke on the return of Patrick Kane Thursday.

Chicago selected Kane with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft, setting the stage for a new era of Blackhawks hockey. He arrived that same season alongside fellow rookie Jonathan Toews, and together they became the faces of the franchise’s rise.

Kane’s first run with the Blackhawks ended during the 2022-23 season, when he was traded to the New York Rangers. The veteran forward then spent the past three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings before making his way back to Chicago.

During his time in a Blackhawks sweater, Kane piled up 446 goals and 779 assists, giving him 1,225 points with the franchise. That total ranks second all-time in team history, trailing only Stan Mikita, who finished with 1,467 points.

Beyond the three Stanley Cup titles, Kane built one of the most decorated résumés of his generation. He won the Hart Memorial Trophy as NHL MVP and the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s top scorer in 2016, captured the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2013 and earned the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in 2008.

Reaction from Blackhawks fans was immediate on Thursday, with excitement spreading over the return of a beloved star on a two-year deal. Many supporters are eager to see Kane connected with the team’s next wave of talent, including young centerpiece Connor Bedard.

At the United Center, the news sparked fresh buzz around the organization, with fans expecting Patrick Kane’s return to boost interest in tickets and season-ticket packages. For many in Chicago, his comeback is more than a roster move — it is the return of a championship-era favorite to the franchise he helped define.

“Just nostalgia, it takes us back to when we had the dynasty, winning Stanley cups, seeing showtime celebrations. The crowd going electric and all that is coming back,” said Adam Story, a season-ticket holder.

Kane’s No. 88 jersey remains popular among fans, including younger hockey players who said they grew up watching him and modeling their game after his style of play.

“I’m really excited because I grew up watching him. I’m from the city; so it’s nice to see him come back because he’s one of the players I looked up to growing up,” said Helen Lane, a young hockey player.

Fans also said they believe Kane’s experience could benefit a roster filled with young talent.

“He’s gonna bring the history of Stanley cup victories. He’s gonna tell them what this stadium is like when the Blackhawks are doing well, the old intangibles. It’s gonna be a very positive effect. I’m very excited,” said lifelong fan Tom McMahon. “I just have to talk my wife into it.”

The excitement has also extended to ticket sales, with fans already planning for Kane’s return to the United Center this fall.

“Already asking for more tickets for the home opener now to bring more family and friends,” one fan said.

The Blackhawks’ home opener is scheduled for Oct. 6 against the St. Louis Blues. Ticket prices were already approaching $200 for the lowest-priced seats on some third-party ticket sites.
