ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A driver in St. Johns County was taken into custody on July 14 after a deputy said he was racing through a 45-mph zone at 130 mph, according to a Friday Facebook update from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the high-speed traffic stop unfolded along County Road 13 North near Joe Ashton Road.
The sheriff’s office said the man, whose name was not released, was arrested on a charge of dangerous excessive speeding.

“What the hell are we doing?” the deputy is heard asking the driver before placing him under arrest.
Under Florida’s Dangerous Excessive Speeding Law, SJSO noted that a driver can face criminal charges for going at least 50 mph over the posted speed limit, or for traveling 100 mph or more in a way that endangers people, property or disrupts other vehicles on the road.
State law says a first offense can carry penalties of up to 30 days in jail, a fine of up to $500, or both. A second offense can bring up to 90 days behind bars, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. Drivers convicted two or more times within five years may also lose their driving privileges for at least 180 days.
In its post, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office urged motorists to help protect others by slowing down and following posted speed limits.
