The Pentagon has revised its official death toll from the Iran war, reducing the number of U.S. service members killed from 18 to 14 within a single day after the Trump administration removed four recent fatalities from the count, according to the Defense Casualty Analysis System.
The Defense Department’s casualty database listed seven of the 14 deaths as “hostile.” The New York Times was first to report the adjustment to the official tally.
Three military officials told the Times that the four service members killed over the weekend — three in Jordan and one in northern Iraq — were taken off the Iran war casualty list because they died after President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire in April. As of Thursday U.S. time, the Pentagon website, which said it had been updated Wednesday, showed only deaths that occurred in March.
The Pentagon and the State Department did not immediately answer CNBC’s requests for comment.
Joel Valdez, the Pentagon’s acting press secretary, told the Times the change was the result of “temporary data disruptions” affecting the department’s casualty website and said the issue was expected to be resolved quickly.
The revised figures arrive as the administration faces growing questions over how it reports military casualties while the Middle East conflict continues to unfold.
Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., said on Monday that Trump has not shared Iran war casualty statistics with Congress and that “there has been no transparency from the President or the Pentagon about the full extent of equipment losses and casualty statistics.”
The Pentagon has released little on U.S. military strategy since the ceasefire collapsed and hasn’t held a major briefing on the war since early May.
Trump himself has used the higher figure for the death toll. At an event on Thursday, he said, “I had a very sad day yesterday. I went to Dover, four great American patriots killed. That’s 18 … and one is too many, but it’s 18.”
