During Thursday’s broadcast of CNN’s “News Night,” political analyst Van Jones sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner remarks, describing the speech as “mean and small” while arguing that it failed to land as comedy.
Jones said the biggest problem was not simply the tone, but the lack of humor. In his view, Trump’s comments were harsh and petty without being entertaining. He argued that the president focused almost entirely on himself and his political opponents, rather than speaking to Americans dealing with everyday pressures — from rising gas costs to anxiety over loved ones serving abroad. Jones suggested Trump missed a chance to connect with people facing real challenges and to reflect their concerns in a way that might have mixed comedy with empathy. Instead, he said Trump began with a softer, almost “cuddly Care Bear” version of himself before shifting into what Jones compared to a more aggressive, internet-style persona that seemed to lash out and then drift offstage.

Jones added that, after watching Trump’s public performances over the last decade, he knows disappointment should not come as a surprise. Still, he compared the feeling to the classic “Lucy and the football” gag, saying he once again found himself let down.
