SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is recovering from injuries sustained in a car crash earlier this month and will have a reduced role as training camp gets underway, the team announced Saturday on the opening day of camp.
A person familiar with Shanahan’s condition told The Associated Press that he suffered a concussion, a broken nose, multiple broken ribs and injuries to his hands in the crash. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the details.
San Francisco did not provide a detailed medical update, saying only that Shanahan’s injuries were “non-life-threatening.” The organization also expressed gratitude to the first responders who assisted at the scene of last week’s crash.
The 49ers are scheduled to hold their first practice Sunday. In Shanahan’s limited absence, assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster will oversee the team alongside coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris and Brant Boyer.

Shanahan is beginning his 10th season leading the 49ers and remains widely respected across the NFL for his offensive expertise. During his tenure, San Francisco has reached the Super Bowl twice, following the 2019 and 2023 seasons, and also advanced to the NFC championship game in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Including both the regular season and playoffs, Shanahan owns a 91-72 record with San Francisco. His win total ranks third in 49ers history, trailing only George Seifert, who had 108 victories, and Bill Walsh, who had 102.
Despite dealing with major injuries last season, the 49ers went 12-5, earned a postseason victory and saw Shanahan finish fifth in voting for the AP NFL Coach of the Year award.
