(NEXSTAR) — A years-old Reddit discussion is getting renewed attention, and it raises a pointed question in the ongoing generational divide: Are Millennials ready to push back against Baby Boomers when it comes to elder care?
The short answer, at least from many commenters, appears to be: not necessarily.
The thread originally surfaced in response to a Vox article examining a growing financial pressure on Millennials, many of whom are now entering or settling into middle age. The issue: the potentially overwhelming cost of caring for aging parents or older relatives.
Context matters. The post appeared in r/BoomersBeingFools, a subreddit largely devoted to mocking Baby Boomers perceived as “obnoxious and entitled,” so the comments may not represent a balanced national survey. Even so, the intensity of the reaction reflects a broader resentment that has simmered for years, with many Millennials blaming Boomers for economic conditions they believe made housing, stable careers and financial security harder to attain.
That bitterness is rooted in a familiar list of grievances: Boomers benefited from stronger economies, cheaper homes and clearer paths to upward mobility, critics argue, while younger generations were left with high debt, rising costs and fewer opportunities. The argument has been explored widely, including in a March 2023 Business Insider article bluntly titled, “Boomer greed ruined the economy for Gen Z, Millennials.”
Now, as many Millennials find themselves financially behind where their parents and grandparents were at the same age, the idea of also paying for elder care has struck a nerve. For some, it feels like being asked to support the very generation they believe helped create the economic burdens they still carry.
“Hey boomers, remember that social safety net you dismantled and those homes and cars you got before you pulled up the ladder behind you? Yeah, you need to sell that stuff to take care of yourself. Because f–k you. That’s why,” one Redditor wrote.
Another commenter summed up the sentiment more directly: “Most didn’t help their kids, why would their kids help them?” A reply added a personal example: “My Boomer parents had me paying for 90% of my own things by age 16. Moved out at 17. Worked through and assumed 100% of loans and cost for my education, wedding, children, housing. Meanwhile they are spending money on their own luxuries and not saving for retirement.”
The latter comment, among the most upvoted, received many replies, including one person who added, “Yep, it’s how many Boomer parents were… Many Boomers could help, like your parents and my in-laws, and chose not to. Now, they’re going to get nothing. Have fun, Boomers!”

A Yahoo! Finance article published Wednesday delved deeper into this ongoing conversation, explaining that the U.S. is facing a shortage of around 355,000 professional caregivers by 2040, meaning that elderly Americans may increasingly be depending on family to take care of them.
May research from the University of Pennsylvania’s Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics found that tens of millions of unpaid caregivers are spending $80,000 per year to care for others. Reasons for this include Medicaid/Medicare limitations and cuts, in addition to outdated and unsteady governmental support for family caregivers.
The study also found that unpaid caregivers may face job advancement loss, depression, isolation, and an overall decline in life quality as a result of their responsibilities.
LDI Executive Director Rachel M. Werner added: “Relying on unpaid caregivers to hold together our long-term care system is not sustainable. And it is wrong.”
