RFK Jr. Launches Cooking Show Featuring Real Food Recipes Under $5

Health chief Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has unveiled a government-backed YouTube cooking series, pledging to spotlight family-friendly meals that can be made for less than $5.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the initiative today, saying the channel is designed to help Americans “prepare healthy, affordable meals using everyday ingredients.”

Officials said the project is intended to put the revamped Dietary Guidelines for Americans, released in January, into practical use by featuring “real food” recipes that people can cook at home.

The administration has framed the new guidance as a “historic reset” of U.S. nutrition policy, pairing it with the slogan “Eat Real Food.”

HHS said: “The Real Food Show brings that message to life by demonstrating how nutritious, delicious meals can be made with whole-food ingredients, basic kitchen equipment, and family-friendly recipes that fit everyday budgets.”

In the debut episode, chef and restaurateur Andrew Gruel prepares salmon cakes served with an apple, white bean and arugula salad.

Gruel opts for frozen wild Alaskan salmon in the demonstration, though he notes that using canned fish could reduce the cost to roughly $2.50 to $3 per serving.

Kennedy later uses the episode to make a series of health-related claims.

He alleges that previous dietary guidance was written by ‘food-industry lobbyists’, says the government had been ‘lying’ about saturated fat and protein for decades, and claims 38 percent of American children are diabetic or prediabetic.

He said: ‘The government had been lying to us and telling us that protein caused heart attacks. There was no science that supported that.’

Referring to previous dietary guidance he said: ‘They reflected the same kind of mercantile impulses that had put Froot Loops at the top of the food pyramid.

‘They were 453 pages long, and they were written by food industry lobbyists.

‘We locked them in a room for 11 months and we said come up with dietary guidelines that are actually science-based.

He added: ‘We’ve got to get people eating protein again because when you eat protein, you don’t eat the other stuff.’

Mainstream heart-health guidance produced by the American Heart Association does not claim that protein itself causes heart attacks.

However it advises limiting saturated fat because it raises LDL cholesterol, particularly when it comes from foods such as fatty meat, butter and full-fat dairy.

It also encourages seafood, beans, nuts and lean sources of protein.

The previous dietary guidelines were based on recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee – an independent panel of nutrition and public health experts appointed by the US government – whose scientific report and supporting analysis were published publicly.

According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 32.7% (nearly one in three) of American adolescents aged 12 to 17 are prediabetic

Later in the show Gruel says processed food is ‘chemically built to be addictive’, links his former stomach problems to seed oils and claims Japan has ‘no metabolic disease’.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions including excess abdominal fat, high blood pressure, raised blood sugar and abnormal cholesterol levels that dramatically increases the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Official statistics from Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in fact show that they affect around one in two Japanese men and one in five women aged 40 to 74.

The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which Kennedy claimed had ‘flipped the food pyramid’ by putting whole foods and protein at the centre of the American diet, were welcomed by many nutrition experts.

However, critics argued they were not quite the radical departure the administration suggested.

The guidelines explicitly discourage ultra-processed foods in a way previous editions did not, with a much stronger emphasis on eating whole, minimally processed foods. They also encourage Americans to prioritise protein at every meal, recommending higher intakes than before.

Full-fat dairy is no longer discouraged, whereas previous guidelines generally steered people towards low-fat or fat-free options. Recommendations on added sugar are also tougher, particularly for children.

But many of the core messages remain unchanged.

The guidelines still recommend eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, whole grains and seafood, encourage home cooking, and advise limiting saturated fat to less than 10 percent of daily calories – despite Kennedy’s repeated claims that previous governments had waged a ‘war on saturated fat’.

Kennedy has publicly detailed several unusual dietary choices, most notably maintaining a freezer full of roadkill and consuming enough tuna to cause severe mercury poisoning.

He has also faced public scrutiny regarding allegations of eating a dog, which he strongly denies.

The HSS promises that every recipe on the Real Food Show will use ‘real, whole-food ingredients, is kid-friendly and easy for families to prepare together and works in a basic home kitchen using everyday equipment.’

It also states that they will ‘cost less than $5 per serving whenever possible, deliver delicious practical meals for chooks of every skill level and alight with the updated Dietary Guidelines for Americans.’

It adds: ‘Through trusted chefs, practical recipes, and science-based nutrition guidance, the series encourages Americans to rediscover the benefits of cooking at home and sharing meals with family and friends.’
