A Monterey stabbing report that first sounded like a random street attack has taken a very different turn.
Police say a Monterey man claimed he had been stabbed by an unknown stranger in the coastal California city, but investigators later concluded his girlfriend was allegedly responsible.
Officers became involved after the injured man arrived at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula with stab wounds, KSBW reported.
He told police the attack happened July 2 in the 2300 block of North Fremont Street, where he said a Hispanic man wearing a red jacket walked up to him and stabbed him with a pocket knife without an obvious motive.
But after reviewing the alleged incident, canvassing the area and speaking with witnesses, investigators determined the man’s account did not hold up.
Their attention then shifted to his girlfriend, 19-year-old Jerralyn Stringer.
Authorities ultimately determined the couple had been arguing that same day at an apartment in the 400 block of Dela Vina Avenue when Stringer allegedly stabbed her boyfriend multiple times.
Detectives later secured an arrest warrant for Stringer on an attempted murder charge.
Public arrest logs showed Stringer was arrested around 1:05 p.m. Thursday and charged with felony attempted murder. She was located near Gibson Avenue and Forest Avenue in Pacific Grove and was arrested without incident, KSBW reported.

Stringer was booked into the Monterey County Jail on Friday and is being held on $1,000,000 bail.
The investigation is ongoing.
