Hero sheepdog becomes unlikely rescue partner after unexpected move aids first responders

A sheepdog in Southern California is earning praise as an unofficial first responder after police drone footage showed the energetic pup pitching in during an emergency helicopter response.

The Laguna Beach Police Department posted the aerial video Friday, showing police officers and firefighters working in the city’s foothills while crews set up a safe landing zone for an incoming helicopter.

While emergency personnel handled the scene below, a white sheepdog appeared to recognize the assignment, moving quickly to steer a nearby herd of goats away from the area where the aircraft needed to approach.

In the drone video shared by the department, the dog can be seen maneuvering behind the herd as dozens of goats climb the hillside, clearing space for the helicopter operation.

After the quick assist, the camera zooms in on the pup trotting across the slope, tail wagging as if celebrating a job well done.

“The sheepdog stepped up and helped guide a group of goats out of the way so the units could work,” the Laguna Beach Police Department wrote in a social media post. “That’s a good boy.”

Authorities have not released additional information about the emergency call or the circumstances that led to the helicopter deployment.

The feel-good video quickly won over social media, where viewers crowned the four-legged helper “Sgt. Sheepdog” and praised the pup for calmly guiding the herd of goats out of the way.

“Sgt. Sheepdog 🫡,” one commenter wrote.

“Hero,” another added.

“Good dog,” a third chimed in.

The Laguna Beach Police Department appeared to agree, writing simply, “That’s a good boy.”
