A Russian serviceman stationed in Crimea shot at fellow soldiers, killing one and injuring another, before opening fire on civilians and leaving three people dead, an official said Tuesday.
Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Russian-appointed governor of the Sevastopol region, said three additional people were wounded in the shooting.
According to Razvozhayev, the suspected gunman has been detained.
Authorities have not yet provided any details about what may have prompted the attack.
“All circumstances and causes of the incident are being established,” Razvozhayev said, calling on residents to stay calm and avoid spreading unverified claims.
Crimea, a strategically important and heavily militarized Black Sea peninsula, was seized and annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014.
