Ring has introduced the Peephole Cam 2K, a new smart doorbell camera built to replace a door’s existing peephole without the need for drilling, wiring, or a complicated installation. The device succeeds Ring’s Door View Cam, which launched in 2019, and arrives with a slimmer design, upgraded 2K video recording instead of 1080p, improved tracking features, and a lower price. The Ring Peephole Cam 2K is available to preorder now for $99.99, with shipments expected to begin later this month.
Like earlier versions, the Peephole Cam 2K uses a two-part design that connects through the door’s peephole. The exterior section houses the camera, doorbell button, speaker, and microphone, while the interior portion contains the rest of the electronics, including a removable battery rated for about 120 days of use on a single charge. One thing it does not include is an indoor preview screen, meaning you’ll need to use your phone or a compatible smart display to see who is outside.
For many users, that trade-off may be worth it, since the smart doorbell lets you view and speak with visitors from virtually anywhere, even when you are away from home. The Peephole Cam 2K also sends real-time motion notifications with short descriptions of what the camera detects, and its motion zones can be customized within the 140-degree wide-angle field of view to help prevent unnecessary alerts from things like passing cars. Some features, though, require a Ring Protect subscription, including access to recorded event history for up to 180 days and package-specific alerts.
