$1M Whitney Stakes at Saratoga Sets Breeders’ Cup Stage

The Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga remains one of the signature stops on the summer racing calendar, and it has often served as a major steppingstone toward the Breeders’ Cup Classic. First contested in 1928, the historic New York dirt race has drawn some of the sport’s biggest names, including Secretariat, whose famous defeat to Onion remains part of Whitney lore. The 2026 edition brings together a deep and accomplished field with combined career earnings of $32.8 million. Seven of the eight entrants have already surpassed $1 million in earnings, and six have banked more than $2 million on the track. Every runner in the lineup has a realistic path toward the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland, and the Whitney winner will earn an automatic berth into the $7 million event on October 31. Carded as Race 12 on August 8 with an expected post time of 6:33 p.m. Eastern, this $1 million showdown has all the ingredients of a fascinating betting race. 1 Magnitude

Trainer: Steve Asmussen

Jockey: Jose Ortiz

Odds: 9-5

He enters in superb form, riding a four-race winning streak that includes the Dubai World Cup two starts ago and the Stephen Foster most recently. His latest workouts suggest he has held that form, and the presence of one of the hottest riders in the sport only strengthens his case. There is little mystery about why he landed as the morning-line favorite. He is the standard the rest of the field must reach.

2 Nitrogen

Trainer: Mark Casse

Jockey: John Velazquez

Odds: 4-1

This accomplished mare is trying to become just the 7^th female winner of the Whitney and the first since Personal Ensign in 1988. Her 12 ¾-length romp in the Ogden Phipps on June 5 showed why her connections are willing to take this ambitious swing against males. The assignment is demanding, but her consistency is impossible to ignore, as she has never finished worse than third in 16 career starts. She owns enough class to make this interesting and is a strong across-the-board candidate.

3 Antiquarian

Trainer: Todd Pletcher

Jockey: Manny Franco

Odds: 10-1

When a million-dollar earner is sitting at double-digit odds, it says plenty about the strength of this Whitney field. He will need a sharp break and an early position to have any chance of landing a share. His pace presence could make life more difficult for the front-runners, but while he may influence the shape of the race, he looks more like a piece-of-the-exotics type than a win threat.

4 Forged Steel

Trainer: Saffie Joseph Jr.

Jockey: Micah Husbands

Odds: 20-1

The Hollywood Gold Cup winner figures to be asked for speed immediately, and that could make him an important factor in how the race unfolds. His sire, Vekoma, was built on speed, and the closers in this lineup would gladly welcome a hot tempo. His best chance would be clearing off without pressure, but against this group, that scenario feels unlikely. Others appeal more.

5 White Abarrio

Trainer: Saffie Joseph Jr.

Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr.

Odds: 8-1

Question here is which White Abarrio shows up, the one that won this race in 2023 and was sensational in the Oaklawn Handicap in April of this year, or the runner that looked tired in finishing fourth in the Stephen Foster last out? Gets the leading rider at the Spa this year and my advice is if you get 8 to 1…bet that joker across the board. Wouldn’t be a complete shocker if he wins.

6 Sovereignty

Trainer: Bill Mott

Jockey: Junior Alvarado

Odds: 3-1

The Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Travers Stakes winner from 2025 is winless in two starts this year. Finished a distant second in April in Oaklawn Handicap and an even farther back third in the Stephen Foster on June 27. Has been in the top three in all 11 career starts with six wins so put him in your exotics. We think he peaked last year.

7 Tiztastic

Trainer: Steve Asmussen

Jockey: Tyler Gafflione

Odds: 30-1

Has bounced back and forth between dirt and turf during a career that has seen starts in 11 Stakes races. Closed late to grab third in the Suburban Stakes on July 4 at Saratoga. A horse for your superfecta because his late run could grab a piece and kick up the payout but not a win bet.

8 Baeza

Trainer: Bill Mott

Jockey: Flavien Pratt

Odds: 7-2

Seems to consistently have trouble getting out of the gate then comes with a big late run that provides a glimpse of his talent. Has only two wins in eleven career starts, but has four runner up efforts and three third place finishes. If he ever figures out how to start well he could be very dangerous. Does it happen here?… He has the right jockey so if the price is right play him for sure.
