Closet Door Won’t Stay Closed? Try This Easy Ball Catch Fix

CHICAGO () — A closet or pantry door that refuses to stay closed can turn into a daily irritation. If it sticks, springs back open or will not latch the way it should, the issue may come down to a tiny but important part of the door hardware: the ball catch.

Casey Finn of DIY Playbook walked Tanja Babich through a quick home repair, showing how a ball catch can be adjusted or replaced in minutes with tools many homeowners already have.

What is a ball catch?

A ball catch is a spring-loaded device often installed at the top of closet and pantry doors, especially on doors with dummy knobs rather than standard latch sets. When the door shuts, the metal ball settles into a strike plate, holding the door in place.
With regular use, however, the mechanism can move out of alignment, leaving the door either too tight to close smoothly or loose enough to pop open.

How to adjust a ball catch

For this simple DIY fix, all that is needed is a pair of needle-nose pliers and a step stool or ladder to safely reach the top of the door.

Begin by finding the ball catch on the upper edge of the door. The hardware typically has small notches or indentations that allow the pliers to grip it securely.

If the door feels stuck or takes too much force to close, rotate the ball catch clockwise to lower the ball slightly. If the door will not remain shut and keeps swinging or popping open, turn the catch counterclockwise to raise the ball.

The best approach is to work gradually, making a small adjustment and then testing the door before turning the hardware again.

“You can raise it too high,” Finn explained. “Then the door won’t close at all, so make small adjustments and test it as you go.”

When it’s time to replace it

If adjusting the ball catch doesn’t solve the problem, the mechanism may be worn out or damaged.

Fortunately, replacing it is a straightforward project. Simply remove the old ball catch with a screwdriver and install a new one in the same opening. Replacement ball catches are inexpensive and can be installed in just a few minutes.

One last tip

Before assuming a sticky or stubborn door needs a major repair, take a look at the ball catch. In many cases, a small adjustment is all it takes to get the door closing smoothly again.
