Chicago Weather: Storms Bring Flooding, Outages, Downed Trees

CHICAGO () — A line of powerful storms pushed across the Chicago area Tuesday morning, prompting tornado warnings and sending residents in parts of the region to seek shelter.

Flood advisories also remained in place Tuesday for a large portion of the Chicago area as heavy rain continued to create hazardous conditions.

Ground stops that had disrupted travel for hours at both O’Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport have since been lifted.

At O’Hare, roughly 250 flights have been canceled as severe weather impacts continue to ripple through the day’s travel schedule.

Travelers at both O’Hare and Midway were still seeing delays of about an hour, according to airport conditions Tuesday.

Around 10:45 a.m., office workers in Chicago were advised to move to shelter as tornado sirens sounded across downtown.

At Oakbrook Center, shoppers were directed to the basement as a precaution while the severe weather moved through the area.

In Homewood, standing water forced the closure of the 183rd Street viaduct and the Dixie Highway viaduct at about 11:25 a.m.

Residents are asked to limit unnecessary travel, as crews continue to assess storm damage and work to clear roadways throughout the community.

On Interstate 55 at River Road in Wilmington, a semi rolled over, blocking the roadway.

A tree fell on I-55 in Braidwood, blocking some lanes.

Near Lowell, Indiana, a semi rolled over, blocking part of Interstate 65.
