Three Convicted Murderers Scheduled for Same-Day Lethal Injection

Three death row prisoners in different parts of the United States are scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on the same day, a rare convergence that would mark the first time in more than 15 years that three executions have been carried out simultaneously.

Anthony Darrell Hines in Tennessee, Jeremy Williams in Alabama and Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez in Oklahoma are all due to die Thursday, each after spending years fighting their convictions and sentences from death row.

The last time three executions occurred on a single day was more than 16 years ago, on January 7, 2010, when inmates were put to death in Louisiana, Ohio and Texas.

In Tennessee, 66-year-old Anthony Darrell Hines is scheduled to be executed for the 1985 killing of Catherine Jean Jenkins.

Jenkins, who was working as a motel maid in Kingston Springs, was stabbed to death by Hines.

Hines was first sentenced to death in 1986. After winning an appeal that granted him a new sentencing hearing, he was again given the death penalty in 1989.

His scheduled execution comes only three months after Tennessee halted the lethal injection of another inmate, Tony Carruthers, when officials were unable to successfully insert an IV.

Hines sought relief from both the courts and the governor but was unsuccessful. In his appeals, he argued that the same doctor involved in the troubled May execution was not qualified and could encounter similar problems carrying out his lethal injection.

He argued that his thin frame and muscular atrophy following two strokes could make inserting an IV particularly difficult.

Officials have declined to reveal whether the same doctor will oversee Hines’ execution, while the Tennessee Supreme Court ruled that Hines had not shown the doctor was unqualified and indicated the earlier problems were an isolated incident.

Meanwhile, 42-year-old Jeremy Williams is set to face lethal injection in Alabama for the 2021 rape and murder of a young Georgia girl.

Williams raped and strangled five-year-old Kamarie Holland after allegedly offering her mother $2,500 for the child to perform a sex act, prosecutors said. He filmed the attack and kept the girl’s body to continue abusing her.

‘To see on video what he did to this baby, what a grown man could do to a child, it’s shocking, it’s horrible, it’s disgusting,’ Russell County District Attorney Richard Chancey said, according to the Associated Press. ‘It’s just a level of evil.’

He was also a suspect in the 2005 death of his infant daughter in Alaska, but charges were not filed against him until 2022.

Williams, who pleaded guilty to Holland’s murder, declined to appeal and asked for his death sentence to be carried out.

Her father, Corey Holland, remembered his daughter as an exuberant little girl who adored princesses and brought laughter wherever she went.

‘She loved playing dress-up, all her little Halloween costumes and her princess stuff I got her. She liked anything girly,’ he said.

If carried out, it will be Alabama’s first execution of the year. A nitrogen gas execution scheduled in June was halted after a federal judge ruled that the method was unconstitutional.

Holland’s own mother is also behind bars, serving a 20-year sentence after pleading guilty to sex trafficking.

In Oklahoma, 70-year-old Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez is set to face lethal injection for murdering his girlfriend at their Oklahoma City home in 2003.

Olimpia Fisher, 43, was planning to leave the relationship when Cuesta-Rodriguez shot her in one eye, then waited eight minutes as she screamed for help before firing the fatal shot into her other eye.

‘He made her suffer because she dared to live beyond his control,’ Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond told the state’s Pardon and Parole Board last month.

Cuesta-Rodriguez, who is set to be executed at the state penitentiary in rural McAlester, said he regrets killing Fisher and did not ask the board for clemency.

The board voted 3-1 last month against recommending clemency for Cuesta-Rodriguez.

His attorneys had urged the board to spare his life, citing his difficult childhood in Cuba and arguing that he suffered from brain damage, post-traumatic stress disorder and major depression with psychotic episodes.

Cuesta-Rodriguez will be Oklahoma’s third execution of the year and the 20th under Republican Gov Kevin Stitt, who is set to leave office in January after eight years.

Three executions were also scheduled for the same day in 2018, but only one went ahead after a Texas inmate was granted a reprieve and Alabama officials struggled to establish an IV line.
