A Long Island man convicted of driving his SUV through the front of a nail salon and killing four people has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Steven Schwally, 66, received a sentence of 25 years to life after a jury found him guilty on multiple felony charges tied to the deadly Deer Park crash, according to a report. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said Schwally was captured on surveillance video on the morning of June 28, 2024, purchasing two bottles of Montebello Long Island Iced Tea Cocktail from a liquor store in the same strip mall as Hawaii Nail & Spa in Deer Park, New York.

Prosecutors said Schwally then spent hours driving around the area in a Chevrolet Traverse before additional surveillance footage showed him operating the SUV “recklessly.” Moments later, authorities said, the vehicle “careened” across a roadway at such a high speed that it became airborne before slamming into the nail salon’s storefront.

In July, a jury convicted Schwally of four counts of second-degree murder, three counts of first-degree assault, two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, one count of vehicular assault, three counts of second-degree assault, four counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, and seven misdemeanor offenses.

Local ABC station WABC reported that Schwally appeared stoic in court and apologized to the victims’ families and survivors. The station also reported that Schwally later made an obscene gesture toward cameras.
