A $9.1 million luxury yacht slipped beneath the Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday, only days after being handed over to its new owner.
The Angiola II was sailing off Porto Cervo, a glamorous resort area on the Italian island of Sardinia, with 14 guests aboard when an engine failure triggered a fire, the New York Post reported.
The flames reportedly damaged the vessel’s seals, allowing water to pour in and forcing the yacht to list onto its side.

Everyone on board was able to get off safely, with nearby boats moving in to rescue the guests, according to The Telegraph.
Video from the scene showed the stricken superyacht lying on its side in the water.

The yacht’s owner, described by the newspaper as an unidentified Italian businessman, was the last person to leave the vessel.
The yacht reportedly sank at a depth of around 23 feet between an island called L’Isola dei Cappuccini and Capo Ferro on Sardinia’s exclusive Costa Smeralda, or Emerald Coast, the news report states.
The boat will be kept under surveillance until a recovery company recovers it from the sea floor.
