A gunman accused of randomly shooting at vehicles in Houston, wounding three people — including a woman and her daughter — was shot by police who responded to the scene, authorities said.
The incident began around 11 a.m. after officers were called to Wayside Drive for reports that someone was firing at passing cars.
When officers reached the area, they encountered a man armed with a gun, according to the Houston Police Department.
Police said the responding officers ordered the man to drop the weapon.
At some point during the confrontation, three Houston police officers and a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper fired at the suspect.
The alleged shooter was struck multiple times and transported to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities said no officers were hurt.
“He was standing in the median right here,” a witness told KRIV-TV. “He was just shooting at cars coming down Wayside. He didn’t care who was coming which way. He didn’t care who he was shooting at. He didn’t care if there were kids in the car.”
Among the targeted vehicles was a car carrying a mother and her daughter, both of whom were struck by gunfire, police said.
A third person traveling in a second vehicle was also shot.
An occupant in a third vehicle managed to escape unharmed.
The witness, who identified himself only as David, said he and his coworkers tried to stop cars from traveling toward the gunman.
The suspect has not been publicly identified, and a motive for the shooting has not been disclosed.
The incident is being investigated by the Houston Police Department and Texas Rangers.
