Inside Oprah and Stedman Graham’s Decades-Long Private Romance

After four decades as Oprah Winfrey’s longtime partner, Stedman Graham has become almost as famous for his absence as for the relationship itself — a low-profile presence that has kept fans fascinated by the private dynamics of one of entertainment’s most enduring, unconventional romances.

That carefully guarded privacy was interrupted on Saturday, when Graham, 75, stepped out alongside Winfrey, 72, at Chicago’s Navy Pier for a reunion celebrating The Oprah Winfrey Show — marking the couple’s first public appearance together in nearly seven years.

Outside of that rare moment in front of cameras, however, Graham has been notably absent from many of Winfrey’s most high-profile chapters in recent years, from her headline-making sit-down with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to the premiere of The Color Purple and her widely discussed GLP-1 weight-loss journey.

The unexpected sighting has once again stirred curiosity around Winfrey’s so-called “spiritual partner”: is Graham quietly her steadfast soulmate, or has he become Hollywood’s most mysterious plus-one — particularly as Gayle King is so often the person seen by Winfrey’s side?

One source close to the media icon, who says they have been to Winfrey’s Montecito estate several times, claimed Graham’s low visibility is just as noticeable behind closed doors as it is at celebrity events.

“I’ve not only never seen Stedman there, Oprah doesn’t even bring him up — it’s almost as if he isn’t part of the picture,” the source told Our News Outlet.

Even neighbors who once saw the pair strolling around Montecito have noticed the change, the source claimed.

‘No one’s spotted them together for years,’ the insider said.

So why did Graham finally emerge from his disappearing act for this particular occasion?

A separate source close to Winfrey’s camp told Our News Outlet that the Oprah Winfrey Show reunion – complete with former personal chef Art Smith and his famous fried chicken – was simply one milestone he could not miss.

‘The anniversary of her show, that milestone, was way too much of a thing that he couldn’t miss,’ the insider said. ‘Stedman doesn’t have to be at the Oscars, or a random party or places where Oprah is, because Oprah needs her time to be Oprah at those events, but when it comes to this celebration of her, Stedman wanted to be there as it represented a celebration of how Oprah became who she is.’

Still, the first source was not entirely convinced by the mystery-man routine.

‘It just seems weird as they’ve supposedly been in a relationship for around 40 years,’ the insider said.

Their love story began in Chicago in 1986, the same year The Oprah Winfrey Show went national – although Winfrey initially had her doubts about the handsome businessman who would become her longtime partner.

Writing for O, The Oprah Magazine, she recalled frequently seeing Graham with the same girlfriend and deciding not to give him a second thought.

Then the pair visited a mutual friend who was ill, left together and, after Winfrey suggested getting a beer, the dynamic changed.

‘I thought he was nice enough, but I wasn’t that impressed,’ she wrote. ‘He was polite, yes, and kind. The sort of guy who sits with an ailing friend. Tall and handsome, for sure. But actually too handsome, I thought, to be interested in me.’

Winfrey added that she and her producers initially suspected he might be a ‘player,’ before learning Graham was single and had been asking about her.

The supposed player soon became her boyfriend, with a longtime Winfrey insider telling Our News Outlet that, in the early years, their romance was far less mysterious.

‘Believe me, in the 90s Oprah and Stedman were hot and heavy,’ the insider said. ‘They took romantic vacations together – without Gayle [King] – and huddled in her Chicago penthouse. Marriage was definitely on the cards then.

‘But the bottom line is, the more powerful Oprah became, the more ambitious and unwilling to tie herself down like that.’

Marriage did briefly appear to be on the cards after Graham proposed in 1992.

But Winfrey soon concluded that she wanted the proposal – not the actual wedding.

‘For years, there were hundreds of tabloid stories, weekly, on whether we would marry,’ she wrote in 2020. ‘In 1993, the moment after I said yes to his proposal, I had doubts.’

‘I realized I didn’t actually want a marriage. I wanted to be asked,’ she continued. ‘I wanted to know he felt I was worthy of being his missus, but I didn’t want the sacrifices, the compromises, the day-in-day-out commitment required to make a marriage work.’

Winfrey later put it even more bluntly: ‘Both he and I now say, “If we had married, we would not be together.”‘

The pair have stayed together ever since, opting for what Winfrey has described as a ‘spiritual partnership’ rather than a traditional marriage.

And when reports claimed in 2016 that they had quietly tied the knot, Winfrey shut down the gossip herself.

‘Six people who know me well have called today congratulating me or surprised they weren’t invited to my wedding,’ she wrote on X. ‘It’s not true!!’

The second source told Our News Outlet: ‘They will never get married. If it isn’t broke, why fix it?’

And marriage was not the only conventional milestone Winfrey ultimately chose to skip.

Despite once purchasing an additional apartment in Chicago as she contemplated a future family with Graham, she later decided motherhood was not the path for her.

‘I was thinking, “Well, if we get married, I’m going to need room for children,”‘ she told People in 2019.

But the star said she came to understand ‘the depth of responsibility and sacrifice that is actually required to be a mother.’

Instead, Winfrey has said she found an unexpected maternal outlet through the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, which she opened in 2007.

‘I have not had one regret about that,’ she said of her decision not to marry or have children. ‘Those girls fill that maternal fold that I perhaps would have had. In fact, they overfill – I’m overflowed with maternal.’

‘They are my greatest, deepest joy,’ she added. ‘They’re the daughters I did not have.’

The school is set to transition next year to being run by local authorities, with Winfrey planning instead to support more girls through an expanded scholarship program.

Of course, when Graham is not at Winfrey’s side, Gayle King frequently is.

For decades, King has remained a fixture on Winfrey’s getaways – including trips taken with Graham.

‘Since after your divorce, you were on every vacation with me and Stedman,’ Winfrey told King in a 2021 interview.

‘The three of us have had a wonderful time,’ King replied. ‘If I was the third wheel, I didn’t know it!’

Winfrey’s response was characteristically blunt: ‘If Stedman didn’t like you, Stedman wouldn’t have lasted. Husbands and boyfriends come and go. Best friends last forever.’

Their unusually close bond has long fueled rumors that Winfrey and King are secretly lovers – claims both women have emphatically denied.

King said in May that the persistent gossip once irritated her, particularly after her divorce, but insisted there was nothing to hide.

‘If we were gay, we would tell you because, believe me, there’s nothing wrong with it,’ she said on Call Her Daddy. ‘It’s just, I prefer a man.’

Winfrey has made the same point, previously explaining that people struggle to define an intense friendship between women without assuming it must be romantic.

‘I understand why people think we’re gay,’ Winfrey said. ‘There isn’t a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women.

‘So I get why people have to label it – how can you be this close without it being sexual? How else can you explain a level of intimacy where someone always loves you, always respects you, admires you?’

The question has only become louder in recent years, as Winfrey and King have jetted around the world together – frequently without Graham in sight.

The broadcaster joined Winfrey for the wedding festivities of Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos in Venice last June, where the pair mixed with everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio to Sydney Sweeney and Tom Brady.

Weeks later, King, Winfrey and Kris Jenner were spotted soaking up the sun during a yacht-filled trip to Mallorca.

The trio then reunited on the Spanish island in July this year.

Graham, naturally, was nowhere to be seen. 

‘Gayle’s often around and so are a few other friends, but Stedman seems like he’s MIA and not a big part of her life anymore,’ said our source close to the star.

But the second insider insisted the theory that Winfrey and King’s friendship is anything other than platonic is nonsense.

‘To suggest that Oprah and Gayle have had, or have now, a romantic relationship is ludicrous and asinine,’ the insider said. ‘It has absolutely no basis of realistic truth to it at all.’

They added that the rumors do not rattle Winfrey.

‘It doesn’t haunt Oprah or make her upset,’ they said. ‘It is just a ridiculous story that people have tried to show or prove is real.’

The insider added: ‘While Winfrey has never been married, Graham is her soulmate, and King is essentially her work wife. Winfrey’s true love has always been her work, with Graham and King coming in as two of the closest people in her life.’

Yet even one of the most visible transformations of Winfrey’s recent life passed without a public word from Graham.

Winfrey’s GLP-1 journey marked one of the most revealing chapters of her long and highly public battle with her weight. 

She has said the medication finally quieted the relentless ‘food noise’ that had consumed so much of her life, and helped her stop blaming herself for obesity. 

‘Even when Oprah managed the big feat of losing almost 50 pounds, Stedman didn’t publicly congratulate her,’ the source close to Winfrey said. ‘It was Oprah who spoke up for him. He’s a public speaker, so it seems so weird he didn’t step up to the plate and say how proud he is of her. His words came via her. Not through him.’

Indeed, while promoting Enough: Your Health, Your Weight and What It’s Like to Be Free, her book with obesity expert Dr. Ania M. Jastreboff, Winfrey appeared to do the talking for him. 

‘He has absolutely been nothing but supportive through all of it,’ she told People. ‘When he met me, I was 200 pounds. And it’s never made one iota of a difference.’

Winfrey herself has also offered an explanation for why Graham has become such a rare sight.

Speaking to Gwyneth Paltrow on the Goop podcast in 2020, she said the endless fascination surrounding their private relationship had prompted her to pull back on joint appearances.

‘It’s also why I stopped making as many public appearances with Stedman because I realized that every time there’s a new photograph, there’s a new story,’ Winfrey said.

In other words: Graham’s absence may be less of a relationship red flag than a carefully guarded strategy – one that has, inevitably, only made people more curious.

Winfrey acknowledged as much in a 2011 behind-the-scenes video filmed during the final episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

‘I think people are fascinated with the relationship because people haven’t seen him,’ she said.

Away from the spotlight, Winfrey is said to spend as much time as possible in the Santa Barbara area with Graham.

‘That’s where she’s happiest,’ a fourth source, who lives nearby, told Our News Outlet. ‘Nobody bothers her up there and she loves how secluded and calm it is. She isn’t a celebrity there and she likes that.’

Graham, for his part, has long maintained that his role is not to compete with Winfrey’s powerhouse career, but to cheer it on from a discreet distance.

‘We want each other to succeed,’ he said in the behind-the-scenes video from the show’s final season. ‘And I want her to succeed and be as successful as she possibly can, so I encourage that.’

‘That’s not always an easy thing to do when you’re a man in a relationship with a very powerful woman,’ Graham continued. ‘So I’m not threatened by her fame or her success or her money.’

Years later, he repeated the same sentiment during a rare appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

‘The thing about our relationship is I want the best for her,’ Graham said. ‘So, you know, I’m dedicated to her happiness.’

‘And so for me, I’ve been able to find my own happiness, my own skills, my own talents, my own abilities,’ he added. ‘I’m satisfied with that. I’m happy with that.’ 

It is hardly the usual Hollywood love story: Graham skips the premieres, King gets the holidays and Winfrey keeps the world guessing. 

But Saturday’s rare reunion suggested the couple’s peculiar arrangement may be working exactly as they want it to.

‘As much as it has been a relationship, it is a true friendship and companionship,’ said our source close to Winfrey’s camp.

‘It’s hard to imagine either of them not having the other by their side after so many years together.’
