Based Grandma Pulls Gun on Alleged Shoplifter at Tucson Ross

She had a firearm, unmistakable grandma energy — and a moment that the internet could not stop talking about.

An Arizona grandmother seen confronting an alleged shoplifter outside a Tucson Ross has quickly become a viral figure, with social media users calling her “Based Grandma” and “Bad— Granny” while praising what appeared to be her effort to intervene.

“Who is she? I want to shake her hand,” one impressed commenter wrote.

The unusual scene played out in early August outside a Ross Dress for Less on Tucson’s Eastside, where the suspected thief allegedly emerged with an eye-catching load: a matching set of suitcases, several backpacks and multiple purses.

It looked less like a spur-of-the-moment theft and more like someone stocking up for a dash to the airport.

As the suspect moved slowly through the parking lot, the armed woman approached and aimed what appeared to be a handgun in his direction.

“We need more brave citizens like this!” another user declared.

“Get him granny!!!” a third commenter cheered.

Despite the blaring store alarm and the apparent gun pointed at him, the suspect calmly strolled through the parking lot, even carrying on a remarkably casual conversation with the armed woman before the two ultimately went their separate ways.

The footage quickly went viral, and the internet picked its side.

“People have had enough, don’t tempt us older folks over 50 well f– you up!” one commenter wrote.

Tucson police, meanwhile, are investigating the confrontation as a shoplifting case and are using the social-media video as evidence.

Officers responded but were unable to locate the suspect.

No arrests have been made.

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

This viral moment does come with a legal warning.

Tucson criminal defense attorney Louis Fidel said there are circumstances under which a person can display or use a firearm to prevent certain crimes, but shoplifting isn’t one of them.

“It really depends on the details, but there is a statute that authorizes people to display or use a firearm to prevent certain crimes,” Fidel told KOLD News 13. “Shoplifting is not one of those crimes.”

Fidel warned that pointing a firearm during the confrontation could potentially result in an aggravated-assault charge involving a deadly weapon.

Still, the online jury has already delivered its verdict on the mystery grandmother.

“Ross Dress for Less needs to put her on the payroll immediately.”
