Richmond Fire Kills Three Family Members; Uncle Charged With Murder

A Bay Area family is mourning an unthinkable loss after authorities say a suspected arson attack at a Richmond home claimed the lives of a man and two young children — the suspect’s father, 2-year-old niece and 5-year-old nephew.

Sergio Rivera-Vega, 32, was taken into custody after allegedly setting the fire Tuesday night at a residence in the 200 block of 15th Street in Richmond, a home he shared with family members.

Fire crews who rushed to the scene discovered four people inside the burning house, including Rivera-Vega’s father, 47-year-old Jose Rivera, who was declared dead at the property.

Three other victims were transported for emergency care, but later died from their injuries, including Rivera-Vega’s niece, Joline, 2, and nephew, Andrew, 5.

The children’s mother survived the fire but remains hospitalized in critical condition and is “fighting for her life,” according to a relative who shared the family’s grief on a GoFundMe page.

“My mom and I are heartbroken and overwhelmed trying to process so much loss all at once,” the fundraiser stated.

The family member said they are seeking urgent support to pay for funeral and burial arrangements for Jose Rivera and the two children.

She added that she is currently out of work, making the financial strain even heavier as the family tries to manage expenses, care for her mother and hold onto hope for her older sister’s recovery in the hospital.

“Anything will help, no matter how small. Please support us during this heartbreaking time. If you are not able to donate, please keep my family in your prayers and share this fundraiser. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for any love and support,” it added.

On Thursday night, loved ones gathered outside the home for a small private memorial, ABC7 News reported.

Police said Rivera-Vega, who lived at the home, was arrested near the scene. He was booked on two counts of murder and two counts of arson causing great bodily injury. His bail has been set at $2.5 million.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this senseless and tragic event,” a message from the police department read.

“Our thoughts are also with the woman and young child who remain hospitalized as they continue to fight for their lives.”

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
