Kilauea Volcano’s 54th Eruption Sends Lava Fountains Skyward

Mount Kilauea is showing no sign of quieting down this summer, with the volcano’s 54th eruptive episode now underway in Hawaii.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said lava fountains began rising from the summit at about 10:30 a.m. HST.

By Tuesday evening, the eruption was still ongoing, with lava jets reaching roughly 50 to 75 feet and continuing without any clear indication of easing.

USGS video captured the fountains steadily intensifying as molten lava surged from Kilauea, splashed back to the ground and fed a strong, flowing lava stream.

Officials said fountain heights could rise quickly, potentially reaching about 500 feet.

The current eruptive episode is expected to generate moderate amounts of tephra, with heavier fragments falling nearest to the vents.

Communities across Kaʻu and Pāhala, however, are still expected to see impacts from ash and Pele’s hair.

Kilauea’s latest eruption follows a stretch of severe weather across the Hawaiian Islands, where tropical conditions could have produced dangerous, even catastrophic, impacts had they coincided with an active eruption.

Officials will continue to monitor this eruption as it grows and adds to the list of episodes over the last two years.
