A man accused of serving as the link to a hired gun has been found guilty in the murder of a Microsoft executive, a killing prosecutors said was driven by a bitter custody dispute between the victim and his ex-wife.
Mario Fernandez-Saldana, 38, was convicted Wednesday of first-degree murder in the death of Jared Bridegan, a 33-year-old father of four. Jurors also found him guilty of solicitation of murder.
Bridegan was shot and killed four years ago in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, after he stepped out of his SUV to move a tire that had been placed in the road.
Prosecutors argued the ambush was tied to the long-running conflict between Bridegan and his former wife, Shanna Gardner, over custody and co-parenting of their twins.
Fernandez-Saldana is married to Gardner, who is also charged in the case. Her murder trial is scheduled to begin in September, and she has pleaded not guilty.
According to prosecutors, Henry Tenon, a former tenant of Fernandez-Saldana who had no personal relationship with Bridegan, was the man who carried out the shooting.
During the trial, prosecutors said financial transactions between Fernandez-Saldana and Tenon connected the 38-year-old to the murder-for-hire plot.
Tenon, 65, initially pleaded guilty and agreed to testify against Fernandez-Saldana, but later withdrew from that agreement. He is now expected to stand trial next year.

Bridegan was shot twice on February 16, 2022, when he stopped his Volkswagen Atlas to remove a tire from the road.
Two bullets struck his car, narrowly missing Bridegan’s then-two-year-old daughter who had been strapped into her car seat, the court heard.
Bridegan had just dropped his children off at Gardner’s home after a ‘date night’ meal with the twins, who were nine years old at the time of the killing.
Jurors saw three checks totaling $10,000 written to Tenon after the homicide, marked as payments by Fernandez-Saldana for handyman work and a business idea – ‘good luck!!’
Prosecutors said Fernandez-Saldana hired Tenon, a former tenant at his rental property in Jacksonville, to carry out the fatal ambush.
Assistant State Attorney Christina Stifler described Tenon as ‘basically homeless, squatting on people’s couches with overdrawn bank accounts.’
Tenon’s DNA was also identified on the rim of the tire that was intentionally placed in the road, police said.

Bridegan was ‘unarmed, unaware, exposed, vulnerable. He couldn’t have known, on that cold asphalt in February of 2022, the architects of his murder had been making preparations for his death for months,’ Stifler said during closing arguments Tuesday.
Stifler also pointed to the ‘high-conflict’ custody dispute over the twins and ‘years of animosity’ between Bridegan and his ex-wife. The couple divorced in 2015.
‘They wanted a majority of the decision-making. They wanted more custody, even 60-40,’ she said of Gardner and Fernandez-Saldana.
‘It doesn’t matter if they were completely right about the situation or completely wrong. What matters is how they fixed it.
‘They fixed it by executing a man when they had other alternatives available to them. That’s why we’re here.’
But defense attorney Jesse Dreicer told jurors that Fernandez-Saldana had no motive to have Bridegan killed.
‘He certainly gained no benefit from the death of Jared Bridegan,’ Dreicer said, noting there was no testimony that Fernandez-Saldana told anyone that Bridegan ‘deserves to die.’
Fernandez-Saldana and Gardner are estranged, and Gardner moved to Washington state after the killing. She was arrested in 2023.

Fernandez-Saldana, the first of the three defendants to stand trial, pleaded not guilty and did not testify in his own defense.
The jury convicted him after just four hours of deliberations.
Fernandez-Saldana is due back in court for his sentencing on October 5.
In Florida, the standard sentence for a first-degree murder conviction is life in prison without parole.
Jury selection in Gardner’s murder trial is set to begin next week. Fernandez-Saldana’s sentencing will occur after her trial has concluded.
Tenon, who has also pleaded not guilty, is not scheduled to stand trial until next year.
Gardner, 39, is the daughter of the co-founder of Stampin’ Up, an arts-and-crafts company based in Utah.
At the time of his death, the decedent was married to Kirsten Bridegan, with whom he shares two children.
Kirsten Bridegan told the jury that the post-divorce relationship between her husband and Gardner was ‘pretty terrible,’ adding there was ‘absolutely no trust.’ She said it interfered with the kids’ medical appointments and even routine meetings at school.
Bridegan was chief technology officer at Utah-based Clean Simple Eats before working at Microsoft for less than a year before his death, his wife said.
