MicahJo Barnett death: Missouri's William Jewell College running back dies after experiencing medical emergency during game

William Jewell College junior running back MicahJo Barnett died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency on the sideline during the Missouri Division II program’s season opener against Fort Lewis College, police and school officials said. The emergency occurred shortly after Barnett had scored a touchdown.

Authorities in Liberty, Missouri, released only limited information, saying emergency personnel stationed at the game responded to a player roughly 20 minutes after kickoff. The player was then taken by ambulance to a hospital, according to police.

He was later pronounced dead at the hospital and identified by William Jewell College as Barnett. Officials did not immediately release additional details about the circumstances.

The college announced the loss in a message posted on its football website under the headline, “Jewell Mourns Loss of Football Student-Athlete MicahJo Barnett.” The tribute featured a black-and-white photo of Barnett along with the words “Forever a Cardinal” and the years 2005-2026.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss,” the school’s message said.

Online game statistics show Barnett reached the end zone on a 1-yard run with 5:15 remaining in the first quarter. Play was halted soon after, with 4:32 left in the period, following a Fort Lewis College punt that went out of bounds. At the time the game was suspended, Barnett had rushed six times for 30 yards and a touchdown, and the Cardinals were ahead 7-0.

William Jewell officials urged students and employees to seek support through the college’s counseling services and the office of the chaplain. The school also planned a Saturday night vigil to honor Barnett and support his family.

Barnett, a native of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, was beginning his third season with William Jewell football. Across his first two seasons, he appeared in 13 career games, totaling 108 carries for 457 yards and six touchdowns.

During his senior high school season at Liberty North, Barnett combined for 1,450 all-purpose yards and scored 20 TDs to earn all-Missouri state honors and part of a state championship-winning team.
