A Dutch institute issues a 'Red Alert' over potentially lethal Trump-shaped ecstasy pills

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — A Dutch institute focused on drug addiction and mental health issued an urgent warning Friday over potentially deadly ecstasy tablets made to resemble the head of U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Trimbos Institute, a well-known authority in the Netherlands, said several of the tablets were recently submitted to drug-checking centers, where users can have substances tested before taking them.

“Absolutely do not use these pills,” the institute cautioned.

In a photo released by the institute, the pills show an image of Trump’s head on one side. The reverse side is stamped with “NL” and “Trump” on either side of a vertical line. One tablet pictured has a green face, while another is yellow.

The warning was posted as a “Red Alert” on the institute’s website and social media channels. Trimbos said the pills contain a high concentration of PMMA, or para-methoxymethamfetamine, a chemical similar to MDMA, the psychoactive substance commonly found in ecstasy.

PMMA, however, takes longer to produce effects than MDMA. The institute warned that delay can cause users to believe the first pill has not worked and take more, increasing the danger of overdose. Using the tablets “can lead to overheating with possibly deadly consequences,” it said.

Anniek Groothuis, a spokesperson for the institute, said there have been no reports so far of serious illness or deaths linked to possible use of the tablets.

“We do not know of any victims where PMMA was found in their blood,” she told The Associated Press.

Producing, selling and using ecstasy is illegal in the Netherlands, but it’s widely used, particularly at clubs and music festivals. A government report in 2024 said that some 550,000 people took the drug in a year.

It’s not the first time ecstasy pills in the form of Trump’s head have appeared. In 2017, German police seized thousands of orange Trump-shaped tablets.
