A strange police chase in San Diego ended in dramatic fashion on a California beach, where stunned morning beachgoers looked on as officers surrounded a suspect on the sand.
The unusual pursuit started at about 7:21 a.m. Sunday in Pacific Beach, after San Diego police began searching for a gold Nissan Frontier reportedly spinning donuts in the parking lot of Ocean Pacific Gym and Wellness.
When officers caught up with the pickup, the driver allegedly refused to stop, launching what police described as a slow-moving but erratic chase through the neighborhood.
Police tried to end the pursuit by laying down spike strips, but the Nissan kept rolling west toward the shoreline.
The chase finally took an unexpected turn near Crystal Pier, where the suspect drove the vehicle off the roadway and onto the beach.
From a safe distance, dozens of people on the beach watched the police response unfold as officers moved in, joined by a K-9 unit at the scene.
Social media video of the beach arrest showed the shirtless driver being ordered out of the Nissan before officers instructed him to get down on his knees in the sand.
According to police, the man was arrested at approximately 8:46 a.m.
He is facing a felony evasion charge, authorities said.
San Diego police have not released the suspect’s name or age.
