A 92-year-old Arizona man has been jailed after police say he fatally stabbed his wife during a dispute over money while he was apparently experiencing dementia-related symptoms.
John Biggs Jr. is facing a second-degree murder charge and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the death of his 89-year-old wife, Jane Biggs.
Goodyear police said officers were called at about 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 24 to a residence in the 15000 block of Amelia Drive after receiving a report of a deceased person. According to authorities, Biggs’ son had traveled from out of state after several troubling phone calls from his father prompted concern.
A probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime states that the son went inside the home and found his father seated in a recliner. John Biggs, who uses a wheelchair and wears hearing aids, allegedly told him he had stabbed his wife and warned that he “should not go into the bedroom.” The son entered the room anyway and found Jane Biggs lying on the bed in her nightgown, surrounded by a large amount of blood.
Police said Jane Biggs was pronounced dead after officers arrived. Investigators reported that she had three or four stab wounds to her neck, along with apparent defensive injuries on her hands and arms.
Detectives interviewed the couple’s son, who said his father had claimed Jane Biggs was stealing “a large amount of money from his account” and making cruel comments about him to his friends, according to the affidavit. The son told police his father sounded “overly paranoid and delusional,” raising enough alarm that he decided to make the trip from out of state to check on him in person.
After being advised of his Miranda rights, John Biggs allegedly admitted that he killed his wife. He told investigators he had “confronted” her about his investment documents and money, but said she denied taking anything.

“John Jr. believed he had lost everything and had nowhere else to go and became enraged to the point of killing the victim,” detectives wrote.
She tried to fight back and he continued to stab her, per the affidavit.
After stabbing the victim, he took several pills in a suicide attempt. He sat in the recliner and fell asleep until the next morning, when his son entered the home.
Defense attorney Zach Murphy said at a bond hearing attended by local Fox affiliate KSAZ that his client was apparently experiencing dementia.
“There appears to be some odd behavior that didn’t exist before,” Murphy told the court.
The defendant spent 25 years as a Maryland State Police trooper.
KSAZ reported it took about 20 minutes to get Biggs’ hearing aids working so he could understand what was going on during the bond hearing. He also reportedly tried to explain his side of the story before being quieted by his attorney.
A judge set his bond at $1 million. His next court date is set for Sept. 4.
