Princess Diana’s godson, Prince Philippos of Greece, and his wife, Princess Nina, have welcomed their first child, marking a historic moment for the Greek Royal Family after the baby was born via surrogacy.
The couple, who quietly married in Switzerland in December 2020, became parents to a son, Kimon Thomas Konstantinos, on July 27, 2026, in the United States.
In a statement issued by the office of the former Royal Family of Greece, the couple said that “Philippos De Grèce and his wife, Nina, are delighted to announce the birth of their first child”.
The announcement added: “Kimon was born with the help of a gestational carrier. Nina and Philippos extend their sincere gratitude to the surrogate and her family for accompanying them throughout this special journey.
“They also thank the medical team and key professionals for their care and support.
“Nina and Philippos are cherishing these first precious weeks together with Kimon and feel immensely happy to begin this new family chapter with their son.
Prince Philippos, 40, a New York-based financial analyst who was born and raised in London and named in honour of the late Prince Philip, and Princess Nina, 39, an aviation heiress, chose their son’s middle name Thomas as a tribute to Nina’s father, Thomas Flohr.
The name also includes a poignant nod to Philippos’ late father, Constantine II, the last King of Greece, who died in 2023. The couple have not yet released any photographs of their newborn son.

While the use of a surrogate is unusual for a member of the Royal Family, Philippos’ first cousin, Prince Gustav of Denmark and his wife Princess Carina, then aged 54, also welcomed their first child via a surrogate in 2023.
In October 2021, Prince Philippos, the godson of the late Prince Philip, married his partner, then Nina Flohr, the daughter of Swiss billionaire businessman Thomas Flohr, for the third time in Athens.
The couple first wed the December before in a small civil ceremony in St Moritz, Switzerland, followed by a high society springtime celebration in Cambridgeshire.
While both were intimate affairs – indeed there were just the two fathers as witnesses at the first – the third wedding at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens had all the makings of a full-blown extravaganza.
Philippos, the youngest child of the last king and queen of Greece, Constantine II and Anne-Marie of Denmark, and Nina had made the guestlist for the wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank in 2018, while Nina is also good friends with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Princess Beatrice’s husband.
Both Eugenie and Beatrice, joined by their husbands, were among the high profile guests at the lavish Athens wedding.
Among the guestlist was the late King Constantine of Greece (Prince William’s godfather) and Queen Anne-Marie of Denmark, who still used their royal titles despite the abolition of the Greek monarchy in 1974.
The groom has four siblings, including Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece, who shares five children with the jet-set socialite Marie-Chantal of Greece.

His paternal aunt is Queen Sofia of Spain, mother of the current King Felipe, while another godmother and the groom’s maternal aunt is Princess Benedikte of Denmark. Margrethe II of Denmark is also a maternal aunt.
The late Duke of Edinburgh’s long-time carriage driving companion Lady Penelope Knatchbull is also the groom’s godmother.
Born in 1986 at St Mary’s Hospital in London, Philippos was raised in a 13-bedroom stately house on the edge of Hampstead Heath where Princess Diana was a frequent visitor with Prince William and Prince Harry.
He’s known to be private and largely shuns the limelight, but he’s made appearances at numerous high profile events such as the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden in 2010 and her sister Princess Madeleine in 2013.
The Georgetown University graduate has worked as a hedge fund analyst in New York, while his wife founded the nonprofit marine research facility, the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies (BCSS), in 2017.
She is the daughter of Swiss businessman Thomas Flohr, who founded private jet charter company VistaJet, where she also worked as a creative director.
The Crown Prince Pavlos has no official remit but is still an active participant in royal life around Europe. The family is closely connected with the British royals as King Constantine was second cousins with King Charles and Prince William’s godfather.
In December 2024, members of Greece’s former royal family expressed ‘deep emotion’ following the decision to reinstate their citizenship.

The late King Constantine II and his family members were stripped of Greek citizenship in 1994 in a dispute with the government over formerly royal property and over claims that he refused to renounce any right to the Greek throne for his descendants.
The Greek monarchy was abolished by referendum in December 1974, when voters overwhelmingly backed a republican constitution, months after the fall of a seven-year military dictatorship. The exiled royals then lived in England for many years.
In a decision published in the government gazette, citizenship was granted to 10 members of the former royal family.
They include the five children of the late king and former Queen Anne-Marie as well as to five of their grandchildren.
The royal family’s statement was shared by Crown Prince Pavlos – Constantine’s eldest son – to his Instagram account and was posted in both Greek and English.
The official statement read: ‘It is with deep emotion that, after 30 years, we hold the Greek citizenship again. The law of 1994 deprived us of our citizenship, rendering us stateless with all that this entails in terms of individual rights and great emotional distress.
‘Our father and our family fully respected the result of the 1974 referendum.
‘However, the provision of the 1994 law on citizenship, a result of the political status at the time, was not befitting of a former head of the Greek state and an institution that served the country faithfully. The passing of our father marked the end of an era.’
Constantine’s five children are Alexia, Pavlos, Nikolaos, Theodora and Philippos. Pavlos’ five children were also granted citizenship: Maria-Olympia, Constantine-Alexios, Achileas-Andreas, Odysseas-Kimon and Aristidis-Stavros.
‘After 50 years since democracy’s restoration, we have a strong democracy and protected constitution that can defend itself, with laws that apply without any footnotes or exceptions,’ government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said before the decision was published.
The royals also adopted a new surname, ‘De Grece’ – which is French for ‘of Greece’.
Members of the royal family lived in exile for decades before Constantine returned as a private citizen in his seventies.
They were stripped of their Greek citizenship in 1994 during a legal battle over the former royal estate, which is now state-owned.
They had previously refused to adopt a surname, distancing themselves from the name Glucksburg, assigned in a 1994 law, which they saw as linking them too closely to their German ancestry and making them seem less legitimately Greek.
