US restricts government travel to Mexican border city over threat concerns

U.S. government employees have been ordered to limit travel in Nogales, Sonora, the Mexican border city across from Arizona, after officials cited security concerns in the area.

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico issued the alert Saturday, announcing new restrictions on official government activity in Nogales because of an unspecified threat.

“Due to threat information, US government activities in, and travel to, Nogales have been restricted to essential movement during daylight hours only,” the U.S. Consulate General in Nogales said in a statement.

“We are alerting US citizens of this threat and change in posture,” the statement added.

Sonora’s State Security Board said it reached out to U.S. consular officials after the warning was released, but authorities did not detail any specific threat. State officials said they had not received information confirming a concrete danger to the public, while noting that preventive security operations would continue in Nogales.

The advisory also pointed Americans to the current U.S. Travel Advisory for Sonora, which remains at Level 3, meaning travelers are urged to “Reconsider Travel.”

People in the area are being advised to use heightened caution, stay aware of their surroundings, take shelter if an incident occurs, update friends and family about their safety, follow directions from Mexican law enforcement and keep monitoring local news for the latest information.

U.S. lawmakers also urged anyone in or near Nogales to take the federal government’s warnings seriously and remain alert.

“For Americans in or near Nogales – or who may have family members or friends there: please heed the guidance and warnings from the US government,” Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., said on X.

“We are praying for the safety of US citizens and personnel who may be in harm’s way,” he added.

It remains unclear what threat in Nogales triggered the security warning.
