Sandra Bullock addresses 'dark time' amid Jesse James cheating scandal

Sandra Bullock is speaking openly about the emotional toll of the Jesse James cheating scandal, the public fallout that upended her life 16 years ago.

Bullock married West Coast Choppers founder James in 2005, but their relationship unraveled in 2010 after reports emerged that he had been unfaithful with tattoo model Michelle ‘Bombshell’ McGee. The scandal ultimately led to the couple’s divorce.

The Practical Magic 2 star, 62, revisited that turbulent period while speaking with Jennifer Aniston, 57, for a new profile in Interview Magazine, reflecting on the media storm that surrounded her at the time.

‘The one film that was the most meaningful to me, because it was paralleling where I was, was Gravity,’ Bullock told Aniston, referring to her 2013 space drama co-starring George Clooney.

‘It was during a really dark time in my life. I was raising and protecting a little smurf while I was trying to grieve, trying to get out of it.’

Daily Mail has contacted James for comment, but has not yet received a response.

Although Clooney was her co-star, Bullock spent much of her time shooting while strapped to an axis rig inside an LED light box.

It meant that she had no scene partner and found it quite an isolating experience.

‘Being locked in a box by myself with no one to talk to for nine hours a day, you do a lot of thinking,’ she continued.

By the time Bullock filmed her role as an astronaut in Gravity she was already mother to her first child, Louis.

She had secretly adopted her son in 2010 but extra attention was on her after it emerged James had been unfaithful.

In April 2010, James checked himself into a rehab facility in Arizona for sex addiction after apologizing profusely to Bullock, although that wasn’t enough to save the marriage.

Joking about how she tried to keep their mother-son moments private, she told Aniston: ‘I was just cleaning out the closet, and I found these hockey bags for stuffing clothes in for travel.

‘Child Protective Services, do not come after me, but when the poop hit the fan for me, when, we know what that is, I realized I had to get out of the house because the paparazzi were going to descend, and no one knew I had a newborn.’

Bullock went on to reveal that she put the baby in his car carrier, put it in the hockey bag, and zipped it up around him.

She shared how by carrying it like a regular hockey bag no one wised up.

‘You have to operate like the CIA,’ she went on. ‘If you’re surrounded by good people, you’ll be fine.

‘But if people near you mean you harm, no matter how covert you are and how much pre-planning you do, your privacy is information that brings them cash.’

Bullock added that it happened ‘recently’ and that it broke her heart.

Louis is now 16 years old and Bullock also has her daughter Laila, 12 – whom she welcomed via adoption in 2015.

The actress met her long-time partner Bryan Randall in January 2015 when she hired him for Louis’s birthday party.

Randall died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2023.
