Democrat nightmare detonates as John Fetterman gives Trump nod to GOP

Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman jolted members of his own party Wednesday night when he appeared in an unexpected video message at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas.

The surprise moment came as fellow Pennsylvanian Dave McCormick, a Republican, prepared to address the crowd, with Fetterman using the introduction to offer warm praise for his colleague and friend.

‘Dave McCormick is the kind of senator that gets the job done, and he’s going to fight for Pennsylvania,’ Fetterman said in the video.

‘I have this opportunity to introduce this great American, a great senator, and yes, he’s in a different party. But I’m proud to count him as my great friend. So, for everybody in Dallas, I’m here to introduce Dave McCormick,’ Fetterman added.

Fetterman also briefly invoked President Donald Trump while standing in front of what he called the ‘iconic US Steel Mill,’ saying McCormick ‘will work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life right here in the Steel Valley.’

The appearance quickly set off alarm bells among Democrats, many of whom viewed Fetterman’s Republican convention cameo as another sign of his growing willingness to break with the party.

Jordan Rhone, a Pittsburgh-based Democratic operative, responded to reports of the speech on X, writing, ‘Daily reminder that we need to win 52 Senate seats, thanks to John Fetterman.’

The comment underscored a rising anxiety inside Democratic circles: if Fetterman were ever to switch parties, Democrats would need to pick up an additional Senate seat this fall to regain control of the chamber.

Fetterman has previously shot down talks of leaving his party, despite frequent clashes with leadership.

Back in July, however, he revealed the ultimate red line that would force him to abandon the Democrats.

Speaking at The Hill’s Nation Summit, Fetterman stated that he would be forced to take flight if Democrats abandoned Israel.

‘If our party ever becomes — and just makes it official — the anti-Israel party, that’s when I would leave because that’s been a moral clarity for me,’ he shared at the event.

Fetterman also noted that his ‘long-term concern has been with the Democratic Party, as I am a member of that, is that our party is going to back away and turn their back to Israel.’

Back in July, 103 of 211 Democrats in the US House of Representatives voted against providing aid to Israel, while 10 more of their colleagues voted ‘present’ on the measure.

That same month, Fetterman also confirmed that Republicans had approached him about switching parties but declined to discuss those conversations, describing them only as ‘private conversations.’

When the Trump administration decided to strike Iran earlier this year, Fetterman wholeheartedly defended the move.

Fetterman and McCormick even filed a joint political committee earlier this summer called Common Ground PA, aimed at raising money from donors who want to support both Senators.

In a May interview with Politico, Fetterman said that he was ‘not changing,’ rejecting the idea of either becoming a Republican or becoming an independent.

‘I’m a Democrat, and I’m staying one,’ Fetterman stated at the time.

Recent polling has shown him performing better with Republicans in his state than with his own party – and even ahead of McCormick.
