Remembering 9/11: Chicago area ceremonies to mark 25 years since attacks on September 11, 2001

CHICAGO () — Communities across the Chicago area are preparing to mark 25 years since the September 11 terrorist attacks with memorials, tributes and moments of reflection.

Local officials are expected to gather Friday morning at Navy Pier for a tribute ceremony, while healing field displays have been set up to give residents a place to pause and pay their respects.

A quarter-century after one of the darkest days in modern American history, the Chicago region is remembering the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honoring the courage of those who responded.

Across the area, solemn flag installations, bell-ringing observances and community ceremonies are bringing people together for a milestone marked by grief, remembrance and resilience.

Niles Fire Chief Patrick Maloney, who was serving with the Chicago Fire Department when the attacks occurred, spent 10 days at Ground Zero in the aftermath.

Maloney said the memories remain vivid, from the overwhelming emotions he felt amid the smoldering wreckage of the Twin Towers to the weight of witnessing a defining moment in American history.

“I brought my sons here. They remember when I responded. So I came here to tell the story to them so we could teach the next generation,” Chief Maloney said.

In addition to Friday’s formal ceremonies, three healing field displays are open across the Chicago area for those looking to reflect privately or with their community.

Several suburban departments are also holding remembrance events. In Evanston, the fire and police departments will host a memorial ceremony at Firefighters Park beginning at 7:30 a.m.

At the same time, the St. Charles Fire Department will begin its ceremony at the department’s memorial monument on Main Street.

Elgin will observe Patriot Day with a memorial on the west steps of City Hall starting at 10 a.m.
