Two Tennessee childcare workers allegedly left a 6-year-old girl inside a vehicle after they were supposed to take her to school, resulting in her death, authorities said.
Sabrina Powe, 43, and Tametria Norry, 49, are being held at the Shelby County Jail. They face charges of aggravated child neglect, criminally negligent homicide, and destroying or tampering with government records.
A third employee, Amilya Hardin, was also indicted in connection with the death of Winter Jones, NBC affiliate WMC reported.
Authorities reportedly identified Norry as the vehicle’s driver. Powe serves as assistant director of Kid University, while Hardin works as an assistant at the daycare.
The Tennessee Department of Human Services opened an investigation into Kid University after Winter’s death. Investigators found that the daycare had failed to comply with multiple transportation rules, according to the television station.
Employees allegedly did not follow required vehicle inspection procedures after children were unloaded, and the transportation log contained inaccurate information. Authorities also said staff failed to conduct the required walk-throughs to confirm that every child had exited the vehicle.
National Weather Service data reviewed by WMC showed temperatures had climbed into the upper 90s that day.
Winter had autism. Her father described the circumstances as an “absolute nightmare,” blaming “people who were too busy doing nothing to where they couldn’t make sure Winter was taken care of properly.”
Nakia Cloman, Winter’s mother, said the daycare called her on the day of the incident.
According to Cloman, a worker told her, “Winter was left on the bus” and that “She’s barely breathing.”
Court dates for the defendants have not yet been announced.
