Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) is urging that Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three children, face a public execution, describing the punishment as a “warning to women” against harming their kids.
“Her children are dead, she should be dead too,” Mace, a 48-year-old mother of two, told TMZ on Monday. Clancy could face another trial after her first proceeding ended in a hung jury earlier this month.
Mace said Clancy should receive the death penalty and argued that the execution should take place publicly, saying the defendant “deserves nothing less.”
“It could be by firearm, it could be electric chair, I don’t really care,” the outgoing lawmaker said, labeling Clancy a “serial killer.”
Mace later described a public execution as a message to women nationwide: “you don’t kill your kids.”
Clancy’s trial over the 2023 strangulation deaths of her three children ended in a mistrial on Sept. 4, after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict.
Her defense lawyers argued that she should be acquitted by reason of insanity. Eleven jurors supported that position, but one juror’s opposition prevented a final decision.
Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, also made an unsuccessful appeal to President Trump for a pardon. Reddington and Trump later acknowledged that the president could not intervene because the case is being handled at the state level rather than in federal court.
“It’s a very sad situation,” Trump told reporters Sunday. “I certainly heard that, but look, it’s very sad. There is no winner there. There’s no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead.”
Mace dismissed Reddington’s request as a “nasty, ugly” publicity stunt.
