Woman on Probation Charged After Fatal DUI Crash Kills Cyclist

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Shateria Sierra Glenn, 30, was arrested last night after she allegedly struck and fatally injured a bicyclist while driving under the influence. She also faces five additional DUI-related charges, including three counts alleging that she drove under the influence with children younger than 18 in her vehicle.

At approximately 8:19 p.m. on September 16, law enforcement responded to the intersection of NW 75th Street, also known as Tower Road, and NW 4th Boulevard. Investigators said one vehicle struck a bicyclist, sending the bicycle into oncoming traffic, where it was hit by a second vehicle and became lodged underneath it.

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper said Alachua County sheriff’s deputies told him the bicyclist had suffered critical, life-threatening injuries. The victim, a 68-year-old man, was listed at a Fanning Springs address in the FHP crash report, while Glenn’s arrest report gave his address as Lake City. The man was described as homeless when he was arrested in 2015 near Tower Road and Newberry Road.

According to the trooper, Glenn, who was driving the first vehicle, displayed several suspected signs of impairment, including a strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot and watery eyes, and slurred speech. She also reportedly struggled to recall her address and her children’s birthdays. Three children were riding in the vehicle: a 1-year-old, a 3-year-old and another child whose age was not provided. The FHP crash report stated that only the 1-year-old was secured in a child restraint or seat belt.

Glenn reportedly told investigators she was traveling south on Tower Road in the inside lane when the bicyclist suddenly entered the roadway. She said she could not stop before hitting the bicyclist.

Glenn allegedly declined to complete field sobriety exercises and refused to provide a breath, blood or urine sample.

The bicyclist later died at the hospital. Authorities then obtained a warrant for a forced blood draw, which was performed in an emergency room before Glenn was taken to jail.

Glenn was charged with DUI causing the death of a human being, DUI involving property damage, three counts of DUI with a person younger than 18 in the vehicle, and refusing to submit to DUI testing. Her criminal history includes one nonviolent felony conviction and four misdemeanor convictions, including one involving violence. She is also on probation for a third or subsequent petit theft conviction. Records show she received multiple citations over six years for failing to properly restrain a juvenile in her vehicle. Although the FHP crash report listed her address as Lake City, Glenn told Court Services she had been living at Bellamay Grand on Tower Road for about a month.

Judge Susan Miller-Jones ordered Glenn held without bail while awaiting a hearing on the State Attorney’s Office request to keep her jailed without bail through trial. If that motion is denied, the judge will set bail at the hearing. Miller-Jones also directed the State Attorney’s Office to notify the Department of Children and Families within 24 hours.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
