After Sacramento Bee cuts, McClatchy ramps up its AI strategy

McClatchy Media is eliminating journalism jobs at several California newspapers while investing in an artificial intelligence operation that could reshape the work produced by its newsrooms.

The newspaper company dismissed dozens of journalists nationwide last week, even as it hired three editors for its AI-focused Content Innovation Lab.

McClatchy’s push toward AI began internally months before the latest round of layoffs.

During a tense virtual town hall in May, CEO Tony Hunter offered a direct assessment of where the company was headed.

“We have a company-wide effort to agentify the entire enterprise,” Hunter said in a recording obtained by Straight Arrow News.

That initiative includes a chatbot capable of adapting human-written stories into multiple lengths for different audiences while retaining the reporters’ bylines.

McClatchy executives have characterized the Content Innovation Lab as a “big experiment.” They say artificial intelligence will allow the company to create and distribute more content, test new audiences and expand productivity—even as traditional newsroom staffing declines.

In California, however, that strategy is unfolding against a stark backdrop: several of McClatchy’s best-known newsrooms have already been significantly weakened by job cuts.

The Fresno Bee lost seven reporters, while at least 10 journalists were cut from The Sacramento Bee. The Modesto Bee was also affected, with layoffs extending beyond reporters to photographers and videographers.

Kathleen Quinn, a civics and democracy reporter at The Modesto Bee, said she was laid off after two years at the company.

“To say I’m extremely disappointed in McClatchy Media doesn’t really scratch the surface of what I feel knowing how many incredibly talented people were laid off today in some of the most critical positions in our industry,” she wrote. “Please hire these folks.”

Ariane Lange, an investigative reporter at The Sacramento Bee, called the cuts “the bloodiest round of layoffs in quite some time at McClatchy.”

The reductions come as communities across California confront a broader crisis facing local newspapers nationwide: shrinking staffs and fewer reporters available to cover city governments, schools, public agencies and other vital institutions.

McClatchy’s own recruitment materials underscore the importance of AI to its plans. One job listing says the “company’s future depends” on embracing the technology and describes the innovation lab as a “next-generation approach to content” intended to “fuel experimentation and productivity.”

The transformation has generated unease among employees.

A Kansas City Star reporter who remained with the company after the layoffs labeled the new innovation lab roles “AI content farm jobs” and accused McClatchy of favoring AI-produced lifestyle material over original local reporting.
