Fundraiser honors wounded Chicago Police Officer Nelson Crespo, supports ongoing recovery after Swedish Hospital shooting

CHICAGO () — Family, friends and fellow officers gathered in Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood Friday to celebrate Officer Nelson Crespo’s recovery and recognize his service to the Chicago Police Department.

The gathering at Old Crow Smokehouse included a ceremonial welcome for Crespo, who reunited with supporters nearly five months after he was critically injured in a shooting at Swedish Hospital on Chicago’s North Side.

Attending the fundraiser marked an important step in Crespo’s long recovery.

“It’s emotional. It’s emotional to know that he’s given so much to the Chicago Police Department and the city of Chicago,” said CPD Detective Moses Woods, a close friend of Crespo.

Throughout the event, guests welcomed Crespo, offered words of support and reflected on the progress he has made since the shooting.

“All your prayers and thoughts helped bring me back so I can enjoy your company, and let’s celebrate this as a miracle,” Crespo told the crowd.

Crespo was critically wounded in April. His partner, Officer John Bartholomew, died in the attack. Alphanso Talley has been charged in connection with the shooting.

Talley has pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder. Prosecutors allege that he concealed a firearm beneath a blanket.

Crespo remains paralyzed from the shoulders down and is undergoing rehabilitation at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

His wife, Jimena Joffre, said Crespo tells her she played an important role in keeping him alive. “To me, he’s the reason I’m still fighting for him, too,” she said.

Proceeds from the event are intended to help the family cover future costs and navigate the ongoing demands of Crespo’s recovery. Those close to him said he has shown extraordinary determination.

“He’s a strong guy. He’s a fighter,” Joffre said.

“That’s what heroes are, aren’t they? He’s simply grateful to be alive, and that’s what matters most,” said family friend Betsy Shepherd.

Joffre said Crespo will need additional surgeries and therapy. While the timing of his return home is still uncertain, she believes he has the strength and patience needed to continue his recovery.
