A Virginia man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally stabbing his stepbrother during a dispute over rent in Tennessee.
Perry Lamont Schoolfield Jr., 33, pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder in the April 2025 killing of his 30-year-old stepbrother, Isaiah R. Bowden.
Soon after the plea, 3rd Judicial District Judge John F. Dugger Jr. imposed the maximum sentence permitted under Tennessee law: 25 years in prison. Schoolfield was also credited with the 160 days he had already spent in pretrial detention.
The deadly confrontation unfolded on a Thursday night in April 2025 outside a home on North Sunset Street in Greeneville, a town about 30 miles west-southwest of Johnson City.
Responding officers found Bowden with a stab wound to his upper body, according to an affidavit obtained by The Greeneville Sun and local radio station WGRV.
Investigators alleged that Schoolfield waited for Bowden to leave the house, then confronted him as he walked toward his vehicle.
Witnesses told police that Schoolfield said, “I am here to kill you.”
Paramedics transported Bowden to Greeneville Community Hospital, where he died from his injuries later that day.
Friends and relatives remembered Bowden, affectionately known as “Zeek,” in a published obituary.
“From a young age, Isaiah was adventurous, traveling to various cities and states, soaking in the experiences that shaped him,” the eulogy states. “A true creative at heart, Zeek saw himself as a superstar, pouring his energy into his music and videos, which can be found on YouTube—a testament to his artistry and vision. Above all, Isaiah cherished his family. He took immense pride in being a father, ensuring that his son, Rian, was always cared for and loved. He was a protector, a dreamer, and a man who lived life on his own terms.”
According to the case account, tensions had grown over rent payments for the home Bowden and Schoolfield shared in Blountville.
Bowden was in Greeneville visiting his girlfriend on the night of the killing when Schoolfield arrived to confront him about the dispute.
The argument escalated into a physical struggle outside the residence, ending when Schoolfield stabbed Bowden in the chest.
At Friday’s sentencing hearing, prosecutors and defense attorneys described the killing as an unusual tragedy and said Schoolfield appeared genuinely remorseful.
“This was a tragic case involving two brothers, and there are no words that can adequately express the loss and pain involved for all family members,” defense attorney Hunter Shelton told WGRV.
Judge Dugger likewise characterized the case as deeply sad, according to the radio station. He urged Schoolfield to “stay out of trouble and do what he could while behind bars to work on his education.”
Before the hearing ended, the judge permitted Schoolfield’s father to speak briefly with his son. Court security kept the two men separated by about eight feet.
