GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Devon M. Hicks, 22, of Olive Branch, Mississippi, was arrested yesterday after authorities say he was living inside a portable classroom at Stephen Foster Elementary School. The building is no longer used for classes but remains the property of Alachua County Public Schools.
A Gainesville Police Department officer encountered Hicks inside the portable classroom at approximately 11:25 p.m. on September 18. According to the officer’s report, Hicks entered the school grounds by using a school chair to climb over a fence and had been using the classroom as shelter.
Hicks faces a charge of trespassing on school property. He has no known local criminal history, and Judge Luis Bustamante ordered him released on his own recognizance.
