Chicago Sky rookie Gabriela Jaquez embraces her Mexican American roots; brother Jaime plays for Milwaukee Bucks

CHICAGO () — At 22, Gabriela Jaquez is already learning how to handle the weight of high expectations.

The Chicago Sky rookie arrived in the WNBA as the franchise’s top draft selection and is among a small group of Mexican American players competing in the league. Her first professional season carries more than the demands of performing on the court; Jaquez is also representing her heritage and inspiring a growing audience that sees its own story in hers.

“I take a lot of pride in representing not only the Mexican community, but the Latino community as well,” Jaquez said. “I really feel that support, and I will be forever grateful for it.”

Her grandparents came from Mexico, although they first met after settling in California.

Jaquez was born in California and grew up in a family where basketball was a central part of life.

She has also represented Mexico in international competition as a member of the country’s national basketball team.

Both of her parents played college basketball, continuing a family tradition of athletic achievement.

Her older brother, Jaime Jaquez Jr., now plays for the Milwaukee Bucks after starring at UCLA. Her younger brother was also a competitive athlete before an injury brought his career to an end. Growing up with two brothers helped fuel Gabriela’s relentless approach to competition.

“As the only girl, I was extremely competitive with them because I had to work harder and constantly compete, especially against my older brother,” she said.

That drive followed her to UCLA, where Jaquez helped guide the Bruins to a national championship in her final college season before beginning her WNBA career.

Her transition to Chicago has been fast-paced. While adjusting to the demands of her rookie season, Jaquez has explored her new home, including a visit to Pilsen, a neighborhood long recognized as a hub of Chicago’s Mexican American community.

As her schedule opens up, she hopes to become more engaged with the community and emphasizes that giving back matters deeply to her.

“I didn’t realize I would be able to represent or inspire so many people,” Jaquez said. “I’m grateful whenever people tell me how much watching me play basketball means to them and how it inspires them.”

As the Chicago Sky builds toward the future, Jaquez hopes to become an important part of that foundation—both as a player and as a member of the community.

The rookie sees promising years ahead for the organization and is eager to strengthen her connection with Chicago as her career unfolds.
