Nor’easter will slam parts of NYC-area with coastal flooding and wild winds this weekend: forecasters

A potent September nor’easter is expected to bring coastal flooding and damaging winds to the New York City region this weekend, according to forecasters and city officials.

Eastern Long Island and the Rockaways could see high tides and wind gusts reaching 60 mph beginning Friday afternoon, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dan Pydynkowski said.

Across most of New York City, the storm is likely to produce periods of heavy rain, along with powerful gusts ranging from 40 to 50 mph, he said.

“This is a significant September nor’easter,” Pydynkowski said, warning that the conditions could lead to power outages.

The storm’s most intense conditions are expected to ease by Saturday night. Sunday should bring calmer winds and less rain, according to the forecast.

Residents should be ready for temporary power interruptions and total rainfall of roughly 2 to 3 inches, Pydynkowski said.

“Keep a flashlight nearby and charge your phone in case you lose power for 12 to 18 hours,” he advised.

Mayor Mamdani urged New Yorkers in coastal and flood-prone neighborhoods to monitor the forecast as the weekend storm approaches.

Although the system is expected to remain offshore and direct its heaviest rainfall east of New York City, residents should still prepare for strong winds, rain and coastal flooding, Mamdani said in a statement Thursday.

People living near the shoreline should move vehicles to higher ground or away from streets that frequently flood. They should also bring in or secure outdoor objects that could be blown around by the wind, he said.

Christina Farrell, the city’s emergency management commissioner, likewise urged residents to fasten outdoor furniture and other loose belongings before the storm arrives.

“Winds will strengthen late Friday, so bring inside or tie down anything outdoors before then,” Farrell said. She also encouraged weekend travelers to leave extra time and remain alert for water pooling on roadways.

“Do not drive or walk through floodwater, and never bypass traffic barricades,” she added. “We’re coordinating daily with the National Weather Service and partner agencies and will continue providing updates to New Yorkers.”

City officials also said dangerous rip currents are expected to remain a threat at New York City beaches through at least Saturday.
