Taylor Swift appears to have another hit on her hands with “Patient Zero,” the new single released Friday.
The song follows a woman who escapes a toxic relationship before reaching out to help her ex’s current girlfriend, who is enduring similar treatment.
Now, the 36-year-old singer has opened up about the real-life conversation that inspired the track.
Swift told the U.K.’s Capital FM on Friday that she was spending time with a group of friends when one woman revealed that her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend had contacted her. The woman wanted to know whether Swift’s friend had experienced the same behavior from him.
“Everyone” in the group immediately began sharing similar stories, Swift said, recalling how they had each been contacted by the new partners of former boyfriends seeking advice about troubling relationships.
Swift added that she was excited to explore the complicated situation through a song.

She began wondering whether she could write the song from the perspective of the woman receiving that phone call—and focus solely on the ex who had already survived the relationship.
In “Patient Zero,” Swift becomes a source of comfort for an ex-boyfriend’s new partner. The storyline has led fans to speculate about which of Swift’s past relationships may have inspired the lyrics.
Some listeners believe the song may reference the support Swift gave Sophie Turner after Turner’s 2023 split from Joe Jonas. Swift dated Jonas from July to October 2008.
Others have connected the song to Swift’s relationship with Joe Alwyn. The pair dated for six years, from 2017 until early 2023, making it Swift’s longest and arguably most private romance. Although engagement rumors circulated, neither Swift nor Alwyn publicly confirmed them.
Another possibility raised by fans is Swift’s relationship with John Mayer, whom she dated from December 2009 to February 2010. Swift’s on-and-off friend Katy Perry later dated Mayer from 2012 to 2015.
Swift’s lyrics suggest a deeply negative view of the man at the center of the song. “If you wanna party with somebody who might know / About the devil on his shoulder under his halo,” she sings. The chorus continues with a warning about someone unable to release his grip when “the toxins take their hold,” before Swift offers reassurance: “But if you’re sick of him, I got you, I was patient zero.”

She continued, ‘Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs. I hope you love them, because they were born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made.’
