New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani puzzled residents after posting a cryptic message on social media as the city prepared for a powerful nor’easter.
On Friday afternoon, the Democratic Socialist wrote only “114” on his personal X account, offering no explanation for the number.
The unexplained post quickly left many New Yorkers wondering what it meant. One user responded with a simple question: “Context?”
Mamdani’s post was a reference to Manchester City, the English soccer club, after it was found guilty of breaching Premier League rules. The number referred to the total breaches for which the team was found guilty.
Manchester City had originally faced 115 charges.
Mamdani has previously been an outspoken supporter of Arsenal, one of Manchester City’s Premier League rivals.
The post came as Mamdani’s administration was preparing for a major nor’easter expected to bring heavy rain to New York City over the weekend. City agencies were already taking steps to reduce the risk of flooding.
Some residents were confused by the mayor’s focus on soccer while New Yorkers braced for wind gusts of up to 50 mph, as much as three inches of rain and possible coastal flooding.

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, while Mamdani issued a travel advisory for New York City.
“The forecast path of this storm has moved closer to our city, and it is bringing more rain and stronger winds with it,” Mamdani said in a statement Friday. “If you’re traveling this weekend, give yourself extra time, check your train, ferry or flight before you head out and stay off low-lying coastal roads around high tide.
“If you live in a basement apartment, know your way out and be ready to move to a higher floor if conditions become dangerous. Look out for your neighbors.”

Rain began falling Friday evening, with the heaviest downpours expected on Saturday.
Mamdani’s administration warned that localized rainfall could reach five inches in areas where repeated bands of heavy rain pass over the same location.
The nor’easter was already disrupting plans across the Big Apple, with major airlines issuing warnings to travelers.
Millions of people across the Northeast, from North Carolina to Maine, faced potential travel disruptions as dangerous weather moved through the region.
American Airlines issued a severe-weather travel alert for the Northeast, allowing eligible passengers flying to, through or from 16 airports in the region to rebook without paying an additional fee.

That included the three New York area airports in JFK, LaGuardia and Newark, as well as other destinations from Maryland to Virginia.
JetBlue also said it was offering a fee waiver as a result of the raging nor’easter for flights from Friday through Sunday. Their offer covered flights from 11 airports in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island.
Delta said that travel in the northeastern US could be affected due to the weather, while specifically noting the ‘severe’ conditions in Boston.
United Airlines also issued an advisory covering the 10 airports across Nantucket, Hartford, Boston, Newark, New York, Manchester, Philadelphia, Providence and Portland.
Lastly, Southwest published a travel advisory for seven airports as the dangerous storm continued setting in.
