A sailor was airlifted to safety after a sailboat ran aground on Santa Rosa Island off the Southern California coast this week, according to the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard received a report at about 12:20 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, that a 25-foot sailboat had become stranded on the island.
Santa Rosa Island is part of Channel Islands National Park, off the coast of Santa Barbara County. The National Park Service identifies it as California’s second-largest island.
Emergency crews flew to the island by helicopter and airlifted the sailor to Camarillo Airport. The Ventura County Fire Department evaluated the person after the rescue.
No injuries were reported.

Photos released by the Coast Guard showed the sailboat resting along the island’s shoreline, while rescue crews moved through a nearby grassy area.
A local towing company later removed the sailboat and transported it to Ventura Harbor, the Coast Guard confirmed.
The California Post contacted the Coast Guard seeking more information about what caused the sailboat to run aground and the identity of the rescued sailor, but the agency had not immediately responded.
